change out characters

hello, how would i change out characters? i searched online and saw if you were in the pit you could press x on portrait, but i dont see the x when im in train station. also, i cant find where my companion that i want to switch out is.

You can only swap them in a safe area (in chapter 1, thats the pit & the pit only, not mission control, hypodronics or the armory)

You need to be in the Pit, not in the train station to dismiss characters. You can find them at the Whiskey Jack, the bar where Tanner is (the guy you talked to for the main quest).

You cannot dismiss characters while you're in the Habitat until you return to the Pit and the Armory.

I am back in the pit after habitat and I cannot for the life of me find where this x to dismiss a companion is? I have looked in party management, inventory and character screen... Any help?

After you come back from the Habitat the companion dumping place is the Armory.

The game tells you in coloured letters once you return where you can find your companions (Chapter 1 - Whisky Jack, Chapter 3 - Armory, Chapter 4 - Habitat Train Station).

It could really use a tutorial popup! Or being able to talk to a party member about dismissal.

I could really use some help on this. Where is the X I looked everywhere, I'm trying to do a solo run, but I wanted to do Jed's quest in the Heart, I will load and not help him if I have to... but it seems unfortunate just to do that because I can't figure out how to dismiss someone.

And yes I tried traveling to the Pit before attempting to dismiss him.

Thank you. I finally figured it out, you can't be in just any safe zone. And the pit only works during certain stages of the game, I had to be at the armory to do it. They really should just add an option to dialogue to attempt to dismiss them, and they should tell you they will only part ways if they are safely at [Safe_Location] or better yet which in any fast travel capable location just allow them to be sent back to the safe location.
