In the inventory screen you can see how much "spare" AH you have. If this number is 0 or more, then you have no penalties. If it's -5 for instance, you get -5 initiative, evasion and reaction.
AH used to be per piece but it was changed a few months ago.
It's a bit sad when I look at my old EA screenshots, where in the end I got everybody to wear really good armor without any penalties, but that was too good to be true.
The penalty to Evasion and Reaction isn't all that important to my builds, but the penalty to Initiative is always a thing to consider. If it was just losing 10% Evasion over 20% better armor, it would still be a no-brainer, but being able to act before the enemy is usually worth not going too deep into penalty territroy, if at all.
Getting hit increases Armor Skill, getting missed increases Evasion skill. Killing the enemy before he acts gives Quick Demise (CS bonus for whole team).
But do I get anything for the ineffective attacks? The combat log says something like "... has given you new survival insights." - but I don't see any skill going up. - If I just stand there with an Energy Shield or an Energy Armor, and the enemy just does zero damage to me, I don't seem to get anything as skillpoints / learning points? (Also: sometimes I get Quick Demises in 2nd Round; not sure what's the qualifier there - Edit: turns out I was doing Junction 14 / Soldier of Fortune, and enemies only hurt Protectors / Allies, but not team; so I managed to get 3 Quick Demises on 3rd attempt)
(On a side note: I seem to get way more Crits than in Early Access 3 Months ago. While it is super satisfying, it is also slightly suspicious: I was told that the three different RNG settings from Early Access where given up for a special "in-house-brew". - I'm the kind of guy who used to play on hard and full RNG setting, and then just reload / do save-scumming... - I know: it's idiotic. - I feel that now the flow of the hard combats is way better / improved compared to my usual Early Access playthroughs, with whatever secret setting RNG is now operating under. - I'm not really complaining. Just curious. - If you ever do a "Director's Cut" version of the game: maybe bring back RNG settings? - Or for the masochistic players: an Ironman mode where you only get the Auto-Saves and no manual saving?)
Edit: I guess "Futile attempts to kill you has given you new survival insights" is just the standard text - I probably missread the combat log last time, when I thought I had never been hurt. This time I was hurt, and it's just the same standard text. - Sometimes I see special cases where there are none. Sorry for wasting everyone's time. It's just the usual "Thanks for participating"-certificate, whenever an enemy goes down.
Edit 2: I guess the last special case is "almost accidental demise" when enemy is dying of poison / environmental effects / turrets(?) / allies (?)
It defaults to evasion, you should be getting it, so double check if it doesn't =)
I appreciate how thorough you are. I've been through several threads and you have either assisted or fully clarified my questions before I even have them
