I think part of the reason blunt is, so far, the superior melee option is in part related to the multiple options they have right at the start of the game: you have your fast weapons, critical strike weapons, two-handed multi-target weapon, etc. Bladed has the combat knife, the chopper you get at the very end of the arena and little else.
I'm sure that the solo blunt users would be singing a different tune if the sledgehammer was not available right at the start of the game, so why not give more options to the blade user as well?
Meh. Not really. When I first beat the game, I didn't even know Sledgehammer was a thing until Vince told me. I used the blunt weapon that you get from killing the two thugs outside apartment thoughout the entire playthrough.
Cracked a lot of skulls with it - not too shabby. Only issue though is that I couldn't swing with it. So fighting big groups was tough.
