Rusted Warfare - RTS

EXTREME LAG
In any multiplayer game, the game will completly stop and freeze, but I can still click on things and look around. This mainly happens when im battleing other units. After 10 seconds or so, it'll come back and all my units are dead, always causing me to lose the game.
I almost dont even want to play anymore its so bad.

Not sure what you mean by lag switches. The game doesn't have setting for manually setting lag options but is built so it doesn't really need it, and can handle quite high lag even 1000ms lag should be quite playable and smooth. If you are talking about lan switches, the game will run over lan if you host your own game.

The problems you are talking about sound like something else not really lag directly:

-It's could be a drop out, are you playing over wifi or something? Packet loss on wifi can cause delays long delays when the OS resends everything.

-It could be a freeze of the server it's self, but this wouldn't normally keep the game running so it would be the same when it comes back. Or it could be the network on the server dropping out, maybe try playing on a different regions, all regions should be playable around the world lag wise.

-It could be a desync and there are a few reasons for that, do you see any desync messages when it freezes?

Um, its sounds most like the packetloss thing. No errors or anything, just pure freezing of the game for like 10 seconds every 5 seconds, But I can still move the camera around and highlight units, give commands ETC.

Could you give me some details, I'll see if I can sort it out. Are you playing over wifi or wired. What does a speedtest say your ping and download speed is? And which server did you have problems with and at what time (with timezone). Also your lastrun.log after a lagging game might help a bit.

Wireless internet, speedtest around 100mbps download 11mbps upload. I have a ping of 6ms. And the problem happens on any server I play on. I live in the eastern timezone. And where do I get the lastrun.log thingy?

Seems like good internet, still wireless can be a bit random. Could try setting up an endless ping in the background to the server while playing, but don't worry if that sounds tricky.

Have a look here for lastrun.log: https://steamcommunity.com/app/647960/discussions/1/1692659135918924211/

If you host your own game either by port forward to have an open port to the internet, or though stream with friends. Do the people connecting to you have any problems?

If I host my own game, and my brother joins me its fine, and butter smooth, its only with the Offical servers, or servers others made.

But the thing is, is that this has only started to happen recently. I havent changed any settings of any sort, In game, or with my internet. It just all of a sudden started doing this.

The lastrun.log just shows the game watching a replay, did you have any issues watching back that reply?

I see you have a few mods there, the other thing that might be the cause of the freezes could be a low memory garbage collection with large games. And large game with 10 players are often the case on the official servers, could you try unsubscribing to some mods and see if that helps (just disabling them doesn't release their memory). Or run fallback_lowmem.bat (this will disable music but). I'm working on fixing the memory use of mods for the next upgrade hopefully.

Okay, unsubed from every mod I had, no change. So I deiced to reinstall the game and still no change. Checked game files, all good.

Would you like me to play another game and then get the last.log of it instead to see if that helps? Because when I watch the replays its fine, but I do see myself in the replay not responding to attacks or teamates because my game is froze.

Yeah, and I just remembered you said it wasn't a full freeze and the UI was still fine so sorry wouldn't be a memory issue.

If you write something into the in-game chat after you get a freeze as a marker for me, then yeah send me the lastrun.log

Well Ive played 2 games now and it hasent happened, which is very unusual as it usualy happens every 10 or so seconds. I guess ill play some more games tommorow and see if It happens agian. I dont know why it wont happen when I WANT it to happen.

Okay here we go, I put "!!!LAG!!!" into the chat when the major freezes happened. But I did realize that I cant chat while its frozen, if I do, it puts it in the chat after it unfreezes. So the chat messages should be after the thing your looking for. Now it does happen at all times just in smaller intervals, I just marked the huge ones.

Thank you for the logs, looking into them. There are some quite weird speedups there, I haven't seen anything like it, might be from packet loss or something not sure yet.

Another trick to try:

While the game is stopped, could you edit preferences.ini and change the line:

udpInMultiplayer:false

to:

udpInMultiplayer:true

You might need to edit the file with something like notepad++ to not mess it up. See if it stays true after to start and stop the game to be sure.

See if that helps on the dedicated servers (it should if it's packet loss), but if it doesn't send those logs as well.

Looks like you had a UDP connection there, but yeah but still the same issue.

Yeah having ethernet cable would likely make lots of stuff better anyway if your going to be gaming. The other trick is changing your wireless channel on your router as your neighbors might be jamming it a bit with something new like a baby monitor, but that's not going to be a good as an ethernet fix.

I'll still be working on what I can to make the game better at handling this.
