I was literally trying it for ages. I gave up for now and am doing the side missions.
I'm having a similar problem with the female character I'm to hypnotize to help her climb the castle tower. I can't get her to jump high enough to reach the first retracting platform, but it's probably my timing is off. Like you, I've watched videos online of her jumping with ease onto the first platform and onto the others that follow, and yet I still can't get her to do it.
In your case, all I can suggest is have either Kid Colt or Starlord jump up as close to the edge of the opening of the boxcar and hope his foot catches the ledge to walk onto it. I have faith in you that you'll get it.
And once you "stick the landing," just hope the bullseye on the back of the cannon doesn't suddenly vanish on you as it has for so many of us. Because if that happens, you'll have to start the train ride level all over again... and again and again until that bullseye remains and Kid Colt can shoot it, firing Starlord at MODOK to end the level.
I'm using a game pad - just realized today that you HOLD jump (a) for me.... This was HORIFICALLY frustrating!
BUT I can't speak to how keyboards work!
they work the same way just with a different button as A is not jump for keyboard
