Switching characters problem

If you want to change character from someone like Iron man or Spider Man and hold down (in my case) the Y button, it instead change them into their 'normal' form, in these cases Tony Stark or Peter Parker. Is there a way to stop this and instead give you the character selection screen like what would happen with any other character?

While the character is in the transition between modes press and hold Y again to get into character screen.
