You dont have to pay to get items. Everyday you log in for the first time. Kiz gives you a chest filled with gold, orbs, and sometimes gems, and sometimes a item. Ive receive purple items before, does it happen all the time, no its based on rarity. Also your friends can send you gift boxes, I would understand if you could pay to get specific items or specific champs, but yes it is based on luck. Please forgive but you have a few dev(literally a handful) trying to make a honest living. Just saying they're are not your typical BIG game company. As for the trophy counts that I think you're refering to (10k). Those are based on a 2 week season, so they're reset every two weeks. We do have people that love the game and play and have not spent a penny. Unequiping items is pretty cut and dry YES there is a charge, BUT there is a confirmation screen making SURE this is what you want to do. ALSO Kiz will run sales very often, one being for 24 hours you can unequip and equip items for FREE. We really do try to look out for our players. Paying to win is NOT a definitive thing in M&M, because I've seen people who know the strategy better beat someone who has a really awesome set of champs. Hola at me Lydia in game chat and I'll help you out best I can.
Gems are not readily available in this game, you earn minimally for first win on the Campaign, you win minimaly per wins in the Arena, you might win some randomly on Login or maybe true something else I haven't seen, but the fact Gems are required to get the chars and the gear and unless you get competitive you won't be able to acquire any in a consistent manner past a certain point means that only those past said certain point that pay for gems will be able to proceed further.
If those random boxes had skins for characters, I wouldn't give a poop, it would be fine, but you roll for actual characters with different stats, abilities and traits, which mean those roll if you get lucky or not can keep you stagnating at the bottom or push you to the top, those that pay will get tens of rolls of those boxes easily and will be able to likely win what they need to go on extremely easily, while people not paying or spending 10 hours a day grinding, are going to be left at the bottom, that is what makes it Pay to Win.
Like I said many game companies have taken to that random box crap lately, some game developers went with pretty much purely cosmetic stuff in those boxes and still made a fortune out of it, while others are putting actual stuff that matter, and which is an horrible idea for any mostly PvP games, in those boxes... like you did. Random boxes should ALWAYS be merely for inconsequential things, anything else means its basically giving the rich people a chance to keep rolling those boxes until they get all they need to beat anybody which didn't do that.
I haven't, nor will I ever spend a dime on this, or any other game, i just can't afford it, but I will sing the praises of games I enjoy, and this is one of them.
Mostly the problem i see people having is the difficulty spike, but i faced this spike also, and then got over it, so what's the difference? I learned to play the Game, and then it became Fun.
I don't really know how else to explain it, most people now-days seem to be deturred by free games they can't just win automatically, and i blame the moble market for that.
Think of this, like the first time you came across a pokemon game, there's a Lot more to it then just trying to dish out damage, you have to actually learn how the characters work, what each move does, when it's best to use them, and in what scenario, and in what combination.
Truthfully, if i had gripe about Something, it would be the 50 gems it costs to unequip stuff, That's a real bummer, but only because it takes a bit of time to grind, but between the single-player campagin, and the duel arena it's not all that problematic, and makes free-play totally viable. a bit more time-consuming, but totally viable.
Unequipping items costs?
That isn't "looking out for your players", that's milking.
It's also more than enough to put people off playing.
