I mainly got these games because I like time and resource management games I don't care that much how historically accurate these games are. Game can be fun to play even when its not fully historical.
Do a better job at making games? No? Let's blame players' expectations? Ok then.
That's a shame. I didn't buy this game for replayability, but for the historical appeal having no knowledge of the setting. I think you did well on this topic, especially with the missions and tasks that come with some background explanation of what happened and briefly why. That clearly improved the historical aspect compared to pre-dynastic.
With that said I didn't feel like the game was too short, the different settings allow to tweak the game and the procedural generation of some game elements allowed to make replaying it enjoyable still.
