Probably their closest to this game in complexity, among previous games, is the one about ancient Greece. It features a number of interesting mechanics that don't exist in later or earlier games from their series.

I played all their previous games and enjoyed them. Try Marble Age, that was my favorite before Egypt Old Kingdom. Unfortunatelly I do not know any other similar games since this style is very unique. If you want some good builder historical games which are more modern and easy to get into you can try Imperium Romanum first and then Grand Ages Rome.
