You don't have to repair the cars at all, it's really just about selling them.
When you've unlocked the skill to see, what cars are worth before you buy them (I forgot, what it's called or when you're able to get it), you'll notice, that some of the barn finds are actually worth more, than the owner is asking. That means, you can sell them immediately and turn a tiny profit.
Later on, when you've upgraded to the largest shop, with the detailing kit and the welder, you can make this profit even larger, by using them before selling. I grinded for this achievement, by doing what @Mardoin69 did, just on purpose. I bought the wrecks from the junk yard, welded and detailed them and sold the carcasses again. This kind of deal doesn't make any sense in real life and you won't get rich on it, but it helps immensely with this achievement.
PS: Of course, I also fully restored a lot of the wrecks I bought, but whenever I didn't feel like it, I just did as described above.
