You need to use game switches in the properties to make it work right.
Many aspects of WITP:AE can be easily changed y editing the command line (see below). You can have different font, different resolutions, and many options are customizable.
Also, some great map mods make the game look much much better than the stock version.
However, WITPAE remains an extremely complex game (by far #1 on the grognards shortlist) and playing one turn of the great campaign can represents maybe 10+ hours of game play !!! Not for everybody. (too much for me, I'll stay with "simple" games like WITE2 :-)))) )

Example of some possible switches for the command line:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3826292
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -fw -altFont -cpu4 -deepColor -skipVideo -colorBlind -px1024 -py768
-fw = full screen weekly autosaves
-altFont = in game text uses an alternate font, Lucida Sans I think it is. MUCH easier for me to read!
-cpu4 = presumably makes the game make use of all four of my processor cores
-deepColor = didn't experiment too much with this one but presumably makes the colors a bit more rich and bright
-skipVideo = intro video never plays
-colorBlind = similar to the color setting; I noticed it and thought 'better color maybe?' Didn't experiment much but it seems good.
-px1920 = sets the game to display at 1920 pixels along the width dimension
-py1080 = 1080 along the height dimension.
In my command line I have -px1920 -py1080 and it runs just fine.
