Gary Grigsby's War in the West

Gary Grigsby's War in the West

Air seems overwhelming.
Finally fixed the launch issues (no thanks to Matrix support) with the game and have started to play. Played War in the East and loved it but this game seems obsessively about air war and less about ground. I know that air was a crucial factor but this is a bit of a turn-off for me. The way War in the East handled it was great. This is different...

Has anyone tried just tried playing the ground forces and let the AI air slug it out in the air? Thinking of taking that path but this is one long game, and I am reluctant to invest time if it is going to be less enjoyable.

My suggestion to you would be to start by using the Auto AD creation system and the Ai move/manage air units/bases. This should work if you play roughly a historical game (invade in the Med a few times, then invade in Northern France/Low Countries). You won't be maximizing your Strategic Bombing points, and may not be maximizing your ground support, but you should get enough of both to win if you are doing well with your ground forces. Over time, you may find that you are willing to try modifying an Air directive manually and learn the system step by step. You may find you're willing to move the air units onto bases, but still let the AI create the Air Directives with your overall guidance using the auto AD creation system. Unless your playing a human player that is focused on the air game, you should be able to do enough with the auto systems. I am interested in hearing from players on how they view the AI systems. You may want to post on the Matrix WitW forum as well.

Check out some of the air tips and advice in this thread on the matrix forums; http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3964247

I found the walkthough of the strategic bombing introductoary scenario really useful in understanding how to use my airforce, although there doesn't seem to be much good advice on how to maximise interdiction/unit bombing.

Have a state of the art pc (latest i7, game is on SSD, 16 gig ram, RX2080), latest drivers)

Turns are taking 7-10 minutes with the air missions taking the longest. I never would have bought this game if I had known the turn length. This contrasts with WITE which took less than 1 minute to execute most turns.

I am regreting this purchase.

FYI, the public beta version that's going to be made official very soon speeds up the air resolution phase by as much as 30%. The smaller scenarios go much faster, but the full campaign has a lot of activity going on, especially in the air.

Has the public beta been released? Haven't been playing the game because of the long air phase.

If there any way to play without Air? I mean to give AI control to do the job and focus on the ground fight?

Yes. That was answered already in the above posts.

The speed improvements really are quite significant.
