Ghetto style, but I bet it'd work!
Does it work?
example. fun mode to a certain song can have X be the bass (kick drum) but when you play that same song in say "normal" or "pro" mode the "bass" will be replaced with the "floor tom" and it will auto bass for you. other songs do this with the cymbals/high hats. so it's def playable but because of how this game is (with the different modes and such) you will have to do a lot of remapping for the keys and as i said, usually for the same song. so, if you're thinking "i can just map my keys to these and leave them be forever, and it will work like that with every song" you will notice very soon, you will be kicking your bass drum (with your foot) but making the noise of the floor tom lol.
from what i have played, fun mode, is prob the best mode (but sometimes it's honestly not the "hardest", so if you're looking for a challenge and authentic play, it may not fulfill that need) for the drum kits, for the most part, the "fun" mode songs usually have the bass drum in it (not auto played) so i would say (as of right now from my experience) that's the best mode to use the drums for.
hope this helps and sorry if it was too long.
Protip: use Steam Big Picture and lauch, then configure your controller with Shift+Tab instead of remapping every time you can set a "swap" key that changes the drums mapout mode, and evene extra modes to switch up your drum layout if you get tired of hitting the hats high like I do ;) . Very useful on the Steam controller, but anything mapped xbox works too.
someday, i just hope the devs do make some "mode" for each song that actually has "all" of the drum kit and is just more meant for "usb" drums. have no "auto" anything if you will. that would just make it a lot more authentic. i get why the "auto" stuff is added, just when you play on the usb drums it does kill the vibe, as i said, you can be playing a song that uses auto bass, so, the entire time you are playing the song, you will never use your bass pedal (i mean you COULD still use it and use it for the floor tom, because that's the sound that replaces the bass pedal when it DOES do auto bass) and even if you were, it still just kills the authentic experience when you're obv pushing a bass pedal down (irl) but hearing the "sound" of a floor tom. i dunno, as someone who has played with the usb drums and has had a good amout of time with this game, i really advise you DON'T use the usb drums, be they rock band or drum mania, this game just isn't meant for the usb drums (currently) we can only hope that changes.
this game can def be great and has endless potential, if the devs can find a way to make it so people "can" make custom songs (because the OBV reason that would be hard to do, is OBV people want to make SONGS they LISTEN to etc, from KNOWN bands etc, the ISSUE with that, will ALWAYS be, licensing, so it's not as "easy" as a lot of people think, i mean if no one remembers when guitar hero started out because it didn't have the license for the songs, it used "cover" versions of them so i'm just saying this because i have already seen MANY people requst this, and as obv FUN as it would be to just take ANY song we want, make songcharts for them and play them. you just can't do that with a "paid" product. if this game was FREE like stepmania is etc. THEN there would be NO issue with people doing that stuff, just like you see going on in stepmania till this day. you have to understand, how many people will be playing this game, what songs will they be picking etc. it's like, you know how many bands exist? or music? and from how many countries? this is PAID game, they have to WATCH who they add into it etc.) that's already a win, you add a FULL support for usb drums (with NO auto ANYTHING) and this game will truly be the best "drum" experience for a video game.
