Disbelief about the game vanishing over such a trivial thing, when private servers were already there...
Hi guys!

Wall of text incoming...
I posted something similar on the official Discord already, but I will here, too, cause it's a really important topic to me.

In my opinion, this ongoing live service trend destroys gaming. I see it with Memories of Mars once more.
With all the "play that event now and unlock time-limited XY otherwise it's forever gone" things going on, companies are undermining each other instead of co-existing, cause one can only play so many games at a given time.
I've had Memories of Mars in my console's download library for months, but I kept pushing it back down the line because other games that were "true" live service ones seemed more urgent, and I was misled when I did my research on the game:
I thought there was a possibility to set up private servers, but that only seems to apply to the PC version it seems the devs patched it out at a certain point.
And I learned, that an authentication through the official master server is needed, which is exactly what's going to get shut down soon.
Please correct me, if I'm wrong there...

So I just started the game not long ago and I'm in awe.
The atmosphere in Memories of Mars is so unique. This feeling of freedom and vastness, and yet it's kinda oppressive at the same time.
I'm still in disbelief about this game going to be shut down, and in complete denial that there will be no way to experience this atmosphere again in the future.

Honestly, I'm fed up. I can't stand it.
Having to read about server shutdowns several times a week.
It's crushing when you see video games as a form of art and not just a commercial product.
Our new technological developments brought so many possibilities, but also new challenges.
There are exceptions, but I'm just disappointed with the way these challenges are handled most of the time, and I have to voice that.
Cause most of the time, it's not handled at all - it's more like "Pull the plug. Move on. After me, the deluge".
Creative works shouldn't just disappear like that - especially when things are quite easy to preserve, like data.

I can't understand how developers and publishers don't have a plan B in this time and age, for the moment when they have to shut down servers to keep their work's value alive and preserve it for the people who paid for and love it.
Like, in that case, patching out the requirements of having to authenticate through an official server. Of course, it differs in other games.
For every game, there is always a player base left who would appreciate that so much.

Thank you for reading!

Please devs, patch that requirement of having to authenticate through the official server out!

If it could be patched out then most people wouldn't be upset and the game could've kept being sold, thus continuing to generate small amounts of money for them.
It’s not even a live service game… Which makes the issue even more ludicrous. The whole issue that the game uses a 3rd party solution to populate the server list instead of steam’s api. And they aren’t paying for it, because apparently it’s players who are responsible that they straight up patched out lan and offline mode in one of the updates. You buy the game, devs change it so it can't be played, you cry on forums, no one cares. That's how it works. We've been here before with paid products before, but most of the times they were online-only from a get-go... people knew they won't be able to play it at some point.

Do you know why players asked for patching LAN and offline mode out?
I wasn't around following the development process of Memories of Mars at that time...

I don't remember much myself, but I'm pretty sure it had something to do with offline play being broken at the time.

I agree with the author of the post. Why should people who have purchased a product suffer? Companies open games and then close them, just like people buy food almost every day. If something doesn't work out, do the right thing, give the project to the community, as the Hellion developers did. Yes, it's a sad fact, but then they just spot on east make them private or let people create their own servers. Thus, the feeling of this game remains negative.

Thanks for voicing your opinion!
It's so good to hear there are still people out there not resigning to or even defending the direction this whole thing is heading.
There are some positive exceptions, like Spellbreak or Knockout City, where the devs put out a community version after the server shutdown but in general, the industry can do better!

You can't, no servers are avalaible.
It's boring, in single you can't too.
If you have a solution i'll take it.
