Bases won't disappear on their own but, if you don't build a maintenance terminal or forget to load it with enough Flop, then you have essentially left your door wide open. They didn't have to "destroy" the base in the sense of blowing it up but, they can use a construction tool to break it down the same as if you placed a wall in the wrong location and wanted to move it.
Since the game is supposed to encourage teaming up by players, other players on PvE servers can interact with your structures, unless explicitly locked out (with a MT).
this is kinda why i stopped playing as thats to much work. they literally couldve copied ARK and just made it so where all you had to do was login so you keep the base upkeeped. the whole MT thing is just crap to me because if you dont play for a while then you basically are starting from scratch again.
