You need to place the patch into game directory first. Then it will work. Also, if you were to go to options and pick a resolution it will show up as the lowest resolution but its still new resolution from the patch. But it works and don't verify the game because if you do, it might redownload some files. The game is not going to be updated ever. So its ok to diable auto update on it.
It's no longer available from the link provided.
Works on windows 7 64 bit (for me), but can't guarantee it will on anything else.
That would be awesome.
This works, thanks, but I'm not sure it's 100% correct, let me alert everyone to some nitpicks regarding FOV.
Manual information for editing resolution and FOV can be found in the first link of the first post: first link of the first post [arparso.de].
If you use the referenced datool.exe to extract nexus_00.dat (you can get datool.exe here[www.gamefront.com] ), you can then go to universe/engine/rendering.ini and see:
This would indicate that the default horizontal FOV is 70º and the vertical FOV is 45º. However, if this is the case, the aspect ratio is not 4:3. As you can see for instance on wikipedia[en.wikipedia.org] , aspect ratio is given by:
r = tan(H/2) / tan(V/2)
Using H=70 and V=45, one would get r = 1.69, which is not 4:3, 4:3 is 1.33333
Did the developers make a mistake originally? Perhaps.
The first link I mentioned indicated, and what the patch Leondre mentioned forces, is 90 HFov and 45 VFov, but that gives r = 2.414, which is not 16:9, which is 1.7777
So what are the "right" FOV numbers? It's not that simple, as you can see here[pcgamingwiki.com] (a good in-depth article). Some people even get motion sickness or eye/head aches with some low FOV values, namely the famous Totalbiscuit. Mathematically, you can use the calculator linked there ( here[www.rjdown.co.uk]) to get the correct values for your desired resolution, after you've decided which HFov you want.
Assuming you want 90º HFov, which is a number that is commonly used in games, the correct VFov values are: 74 for 4:3 resolutions, 59 for 16:9 resolutions, and 65 for 16:10 resolutions.
What I personally do is the following. I extracted the nexus_00.dat using datool.exe, than deleted nexus_00.dat as all its contents were extracted to the game folder and the game will use that instead (saves me 900MB). Then I went to universe/engine/rendering.ini and manually put the FOV values I wanted. I can then use the patch Leondre provided to change resolution, unticking the "FOV fix" field, as that would edit the rendering.ini file.
This way, with the patch, I can change to 4:3 resolutions in order to view the mission briefings without distortions and back to 16:9 resolutions to play the game. Only thing is, I have to manually change the FOV values between resolutions. Or I'm mostly lazy and don't care to view the mission briefings on a 4:3 resolution with 16:9 FOV values.
Btw, some "unusual" resolutions are not supported by the game, which then defaults to 1024x768, I noticed this when trying to run at 1440x1080. I think this is the problem that the original poster, bednar, mentioned.
Cinetyk mentioned switching between 16:9 and 4:3 (16:12) for the briefing using the patch? I don't understand how that works. I am playing through the game for the first time while I'm modding it to look better. Specifically getting rid of any stretching caused by playing in widescreen. And I would like to be able to view the briefings properly without having to quit the game and move files to do so. How is that doable?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I am also developing a mod that makes the game look better in widescreen and fixes some stretching that occurs when playing in widescreen. As well as improving the look of the background starfields drastically and other small HD improvements. Currently it is only for 16:9 resolutions such as 720, 1080p 2560x1440, etc. But I plan to release a 16:10 version as well.
I recommend anyone playing this game in widesceen downloads this mod. As it only seeks to improve the look of the game.
Unfortunately this doesn't fix the briefings but I am looking into how difficult that might be to fix.
You can find the mod on Moddb.com at:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/nexus-jupiter-hd-widescreen-169-1080/downloads
Or just search ModDB for "Nexus HD widescreen"
The title of the mod is "Nexus: Jupiter HD Widescreen 16:9 (1080)"
I haven't played this in about 6-7 months, but from what I can remember it is the same thing - I think the point of the patch was to make it easier to do.
The problem with altering the resolution of the game to 16:9 or 16:10 is that it makes the pre-mission briefings distorted, like text and other assets appear out of place or off-screen. I used the patch to play the game in widescreen, but because of this, sometimes I would go back to original 4:3 resolutions to view a mission briefing (with no visual distortions) and then apply the patch and correct the FOV in order to play the actual game. It's a bit of a hassle, but no too much.
Appreciate your work on the mod. I'll try and give a look when I get back to playing some Nexus.
