The biggest benefit of using it is more points to spend at the end of each mission, I think you get more points for live ships scanned than dead ones. Scanning live ships is not easy though as your shield drops, so if you want to do this make sure the scanning ships is not the closest ship to the enemy or it will get targeted and destroyed. In the sp missions, I tend to send the Sparta in first to draw fire then scan with the Brutus at max range, but even this can fail and they go for the Brutus.
Hope this helps

Resources are allocated according to mission objectives and bonus objectives, the Datascanner theory points were not properly implemented when the game was released, ive got a post on around page 4-5 in the discussions thread about how to obtain the medals.
Bonus objectives also count towards unlocking certain weapons later in game, such as
Nova Plasma Guns, (these are by far the best combo for angelwing 2xNPG 3xDelektron)
Big Bang Missiles,
Ion Scream Bombs,
Anti-G Railgun,
Tremor Torpedos,
Antimatter Drives,
Integrity Shield ( this may be scripted)
So your saying that, in a roundabout way, by scanning ships can yeald points to spend. :)

Utwig, the answer is no to random scanning. XP is currently set to a certain amount per mission. There are some exceptions which will be detailed at a later date once we get the CEP project finished.
I didnt say anything about xp, only points to spend on the engineering screen. But as you mention it, if you put the xp points you earn into the engineering skill, you get more points to spend. So again, the answer to the original question seems to be yes, there is a benefit to scanning things even if its indirect benefit, and the things to scan should be objective based. Seems thats all cleared up now.
