The only time you get points back is when you add and remove a module within the same edit session.
Once you confirm the modification you never get any points back from removing a module. Which is stupid because some mission can get really difficult if you don't have a good setup, and sometimes you don't get enough point to properly refit your ship

but thanks for the help
Shipping a quick remaster for modern PC, like nordic did with the 2016 1.03b update, and by giving away Nexus 1 copies to backers it could have been a success.
The ship movement behaviors are unmatched to this day in this genre.
I used to have the same feels as you about not getting a refund when clearing a fitting slot. Eventually, I set up a series of saves anytime I played campaign. "Mid-mission" for when I couldn't finish in one sitting, "Resource Backup" for post-briefing, before I spend my points each mission, and "Main Save" which was for after I spent my points. I know, it's a bit save-scummy, I was young heh. But this way, any time I made a mistake in fitting it was super easy to correct by loading my backup file.
still love the game no matter what, just couldnt work out why i wasnt getting the points back, that dam Titan mission is a pain though, i got caught in the fort shield with my fleet outside it lol
