Xbox 360 Controls Wrong on Linux
OVERVIEW:
The buttons are not mapped correctly. With Xbox 360 steam input turned OFF (the default, suggested mode), the real B button is mapped to Select, and the real X button is mapped to Back. According to the game, A should be Select, and B should be Back. Other buttons are wrong too, like Left Stick Click hits start menu. No rhyme or reason and I can't find a list of the controls.

I tried using steam input, and that made the A button work, but I got the "two characters per controller" problem, so with 2 controllers, the screen is split 4 ways because it thinks each controller is 2 or something.

Trying to play basic local coop, this happens in local vs too.

I'm using the default xpad driver that works in every other game. I tried using xboxdrv instead and had the exact same problem (no change).

Please help, I really want to play this multiplayer on Linux with my girlfriend. So far I haven't been able to play at all.

Hi Rat King,

Thank you for reaching out to us with the issue.

Does the issue occur in the singleplayer mode also?
Does your girlfriend use a controller, as well?

Could you please open the 'Help & Options' via the main menu and make sure which controller scheme have you chosen? The two control schemes will have different effects on what use a controller has in-game.

'Mouse & Keyboard' will result in the controller being designated to a 2nd player whereas 'Mouse, Keyboard & Controller' will result in the controller being assigned as an alternate control scheme for Player One.

Thank you for your continued patience,

Same issue here. 2 Controllers. both mismapped. Happens in menu also.

I figured out the mismapped keys, the game is playable in a weird way.

Controller Mapping -> Game Mapping
B -> A
A -> X
X -> B
Select -> L2
Start -> R2
L3/R3 -> Map?
Guide Button -> Start

Other buttons seem to work normally. After playing for a bit, the audio started cutting in/out (mostly out) which was quite annoying, but that's an issue for another thread.

Thank you LordTroan,

Can you please tell us which version of Linux you are playing on?
Are you using 360 controllers as well?
Have you set up your controller in Steam Controller Settings?

Get back to us when you can,

Hi Team17_Help,

Yes, this issue occurs in singleplayer mode also. We are both using a controller. When I play single player, I am also using a controller. I have always set the control scheme to "Mouse, Keyboard & Controller" since that's the only way to use a controller for player 1.

I am running Solus Linux, it's a rolling release but right now I'm on kernel 4.18.5-90.current because the newest kernel (4.19) has a graphical display bug with my gpu (this is the second to last kernel).

Thanks Rat King,

The Escapists 2 is only designed to run properly on these versions of Linux. Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 18.2.

I would also like to point out that Steam only supports Linux Ubuntu at this time. Are you able to run the game on Ubuntu and Linux Mint and see if the controls work as intended then?

Get back to us when you can.

ubuntu 14.04 no longer has technical support

Hi DxMax,

We are sorry to hear that you're experiencing the same issue with your Xbox 360 controller.

Can you please try the following steps?

1. Unplug the controller
2. Launch the Steam client and click the controller icon at the top right to enter Big Picture Mode
3. Go to Settings > Controller Settings and make sure that "Xbox Configuration Support" is toggled on.
4. Then simply plug your controller in via a microUSB cable or a wireless dongle.

Please get back to us when you can

I tried again. some games work with the "Xbox Configuration Support" and others have to be disabled.
But in the escapist2 it gives the same result in both cases. (it would be best if it works with the option deactivated. in linux most games work well with that option turned off, there are only few exceptions)

The control works but the buttons are badly mapped, as usrtrv said.

X is B,
B is A and A is X.

Thank you for getting back to us.

The game is recommended for Ubuntu or Mint Linux. Can you please confirm if you're using one of them?

Do you use any third party software with your controller?
Can please oper the Controller settings again, click your detected controller and 'Define layout'? Are the primary and secondary action keys and the go back key linked to correct buttons?

Get back to us as soon as you can

Yes, I use Ubuntu. I do not use any third party software and the control is correctly configured. It works perfectly with other games (which are also from team17 like overcooked 2 and worms wmd).
I also try it on SteamOS. and everything works correctly in that system

Still no workaround for this issue? Currently on Ubuntu 18.04LTS using Xbox One controllers, behaves just as described in original post.

OMG, it's been more than a year... all hopes are lost. So the button index seems wrong. 0 is 1, 1 is 2 and on and on
Locoxella Aug 22, 2020 @ 9:53pm
Only Xbox one controllers are wrong. Creating a custom configuration won't help. Steam controllers works fine luckily.
