Thank you for reaching out to us with the issue.
Does the issue occur in the singleplayer mode also?
Does your girlfriend use a controller, as well?
Could you please open the 'Help & Options' via the main menu and make sure which controller scheme have you chosen? The two control schemes will have different effects on what use a controller has in-game.
'Mouse & Keyboard' will result in the controller being designated to a 2nd player whereas 'Mouse, Keyboard & Controller' will result in the controller being assigned as an alternate control scheme for Player One.
Thank you for your continued patience,

I figured out the mismapped keys, the game is playable in a weird way.
Controller Mapping -> Game Mapping
B -> A
A -> X
X -> B
Select -> L2
Start -> R2
L3/R3 -> Map?
Guide Button -> Start
Other buttons seem to work normally. After playing for a bit, the audio started cutting in/out (mostly out) which was quite annoying, but that's an issue for another thread.
Can you please tell us which version of Linux you are playing on?
Are you using 360 controllers as well?
Have you set up your controller in Steam Controller Settings?
Get back to us when you can,

Yes, this issue occurs in singleplayer mode also. We are both using a controller. When I play single player, I am also using a controller. I have always set the control scheme to "Mouse, Keyboard & Controller" since that's the only way to use a controller for player 1.
I am running Solus Linux, it's a rolling release but right now I'm on kernel 4.18.5-90.current because the newest kernel (4.19) has a graphical display bug with my gpu (this is the second to last kernel).
The Escapists 2 is only designed to run properly on these versions of Linux. Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 18.2.
I would also like to point out that Steam only supports Linux Ubuntu at this time. Are you able to run the game on Ubuntu and Linux Mint and see if the controls work as intended then?
Get back to us when you can.

ubuntu 14.04 no longer has technical support
We are sorry to hear that you're experiencing the same issue with your Xbox 360 controller.
Can you please try the following steps?
1. Unplug the controller
2. Launch the Steam client and click the controller icon at the top right to enter Big Picture Mode
3. Go to Settings > Controller Settings and make sure that "Xbox Configuration Support" is toggled on.
4. Then simply plug your controller in via a microUSB cable or a wireless dongle.
Please get back to us when you can

But in the escapist2 it gives the same result in both cases. (it would be best if it works with the option deactivated. in linux most games work well with that option turned off, there are only few exceptions)
The control works but the buttons are badly mapped, as usrtrv said.
X is B,
B is A and A is X.
The game is recommended for Ubuntu or Mint Linux. Can you please confirm if you're using one of them?
Do you use any third party software with your controller?
Can please oper the Controller settings again, click your detected controller and 'Define layout'? Are the primary and secondary action keys and the go back key linked to correct buttons?
Get back to us as soon as you can

I also try it on SteamOS. and everything works correctly in that system
Thank you for getting back in touch with us and for all the information you have provided.
We have passed the problem with the controller mapping on Linux along to the team for further investigation.
Thank you for yor continued support and patience,
