If you are the creative type of person who likes to create maps, stick around with The Escapists 1 for the map editor... for now.
If you are more of the person who likes to escape more than create maps, then go for The escapists 2.
Personally I like The Escapists 2 MUCH more better than 1. Better artwork, new combat system, somewhat more difficult for difficult maps and easier for easier maps. Just note that you need to get used to the controls for this game. When I moved from The Escapists 1 to 2, it took me 3 hours of gameplay to master and get used to the keystrokes.
Whether or not the game is harder than the first...to be honest I'm not entirely sure. It's a puzzle game and once you figure the puzzle out it isn't terribly difficult to repeat that success. I do kinda feel Escapists 2 is a little easier because of the quality of life improvements, but you could just as easily flip that around and say Escapists 1 was more tedious than challenging.
Even the map editor is a little mixed. Escapists 1 gave us way more creative freedom, but had some rather severe bugs (like switching menus accidentally deleting everything or half the prison getting tied up for no reason when adding a roof). Escapists 2 so far doesn't seem that badly buggy, but is painfully limited. We can't even have outer doors or electric fences.
