You probably find the game is running without v-sync which means it renders as fast as possible (make sure it's turned on in the options). The complexity of the game rarely enters the equation with heat, as you will often find more graphically intensive games spend more time on the GPU and a lot less on the CPU.
Any modern computer system won't fry from heat, it will just slow down when you hit critical limits (although it doesn't really do your computer any favors hitting the thermal throttle all the time).
edit: I should mention it looks like the v-sync option doesn't stick in The Escapists 2, so you may have to force v-sync in your video driver panel.
If V-sync is actually operating (verify through a third-party program that your FPS is capped - you cannot trust your GPU driver, nor can you trust game options), that eliminates your video card generating the excessive heat. Well, almost. Hot air from the GPU/CPU can be getting trapped inside your machine which leads to thermal runaway.
If your computer has overheated once, it will do so again. If it's a frequent issue, you'll more than likely end up reducing its lifespan significantly. Sadly it may be just that you have a mechanical problem, but it's more likely to be one of the following:
Unrestricted V-sync (shouldn't cause overheating either, but it will generate more than normal)
Build up of hot-air in your case. Maybe adding a case fan would be enough, or maybe the PSU fan is insufficient or damaged.
Poor room ventilation or maybe you live in a hotter than normal environment. Don't put the computer high up in the room and make sure it has plenty of air space around it, if temperatures are >29C ambient, it could be problematic.
The fan may not be spinning at full speed, or the heat sink is not attached properly (sometimes thermal paste between the heat sink and fan dries out and cracks, causing significantly poorer cooling).
The cooling may never have been sufficient for full operation in the first place. (Sometimes companies skimp on cooling, particularly when it comes to high core count consumer CPUs and laptops)
I think that about covers most of the causes. There are a lot of reasons why it could be overheating, but the game is not the actual cause. Software does not cause overheating basically; with unrestricted v-sync and all cores at max utilization (no overclocking), the system should never crash or hit throttling temperature unless it has a design fault, hardware problem or insufficient ambient air flow around it.
