BOXVR
Recenter room not working.
Hardware:
Oculus Rift S
nVidia GTX 980ti
Intel 5820k
32GB RAM

Software:
Windows 10 Pro

I just bought the game and I've been trying to set it up for my play space, and it has been extremely frustrating. I've owned the game for nearly two hours now and have yet to be able to play at all.

Originally I was having issues with the play area facing the wrong way, but that was fixed by redrawing my guardian while in game... not really an acceptable way to fix that if you asked me, but hey, it worked.

Now I am having issues with the play area not being centered anywhere near the right place. From what I understand, it should try to center the play area in the center of the guardian area, but that is most definitely not what is happening. Whenever I use the "recenter room" function in the options, it alternates between two spots that are about 15 feet away from each other. (They didn't start 15 feet away from each other, but they managed to get there as I played around with the setting by recentering in different positions to see if that would move the play area where I needed it. It always just alternated between two spots though.) As it is now, neither of the standing positions are even in my room, never mind the guardian area. One is way too far forward and therefore in my roommates' room, and the other is way too far back and in a bush just outside my window. I have tried redrawing the guardian again, multiple times, with multiple sizes, shapes, and orientations to try and trick the recenter function into being where I need it, all to no avail. I am becoming extremely frustrated at this.

I would also like to (STRONGLY) suggest that a proper room calibration system be implemented, which allows the user to adjust the orientation and position of the room manually, a la Beatsaber. I would consider this basic functionality of a VR game, and I am dismayed that it is not present here. At the very least, make the recenter room function actually center the room on the position and orientation of the headset. (I would consider that the /minimally/ acceptable solution, though I would strongly prefer the former.)

Steps to recreate:

Using an Oculus Rift S:
-Draw a new boundary for the room, preferably in a position and orientation significantly different from the usual play space.
-Launch BOXVR
-Redraw the guardian in game to adjust the orientation of the room to match the new play space. (Preferably the play space should be out-of-center at this point, though facing the correct direction.)
-Use the "recenter room function" multiple times, standing in multiple different positions to try and manipulate the center of the place space to the desired position. Specifically by moving to alternating extremes of the desired direction of movement. (I.e. if you wish to shift the play space backwards, try moving forwards and backwards as you recenter the room to try and get one of the two positions in the right area.)
-Redraw the guardian in multiple shapes and sizes and then recener the room in order to try and manipulate the play area into the right position, even if the guardian no longer accuately represents the dimensions of the play area.
-Attempt to maintain your composure.

It probably took me 8 or 10 times of eliminating/reseting/reseting, etc the guardian system to get boxvr in the center of my physical play area. And I had to experiment with where to put the guardian borders to get my stance area where I want it. Since then, apparently something in the config of boxvr has started behaving itself and I haven't had any further problems except I often have to use the rift reset view in the lobby of boxvr to face the direction I desire. Be persistent. I think it'l work out eventually.

"Attempt to maintain your composure." That is hilarious.

I'd like to add that this is still a problem. I don't understand why the center room function doesn't work. It obviously used to work because I'm pretty sure that's what I used to center the game in the first place. There must be a setting saved in a file somewhere to reset the values.

I also don't understand why different profiles have different room centers. When I click between two profiles, the center shifts. Like... the physical play area I'm standing in has a definite center that doesn't move regardless of what profile I select in a game.

EDIT: I recommend using the method in the next post, but I'll leave this here.

If you want a quick fix and don't care about your profile data, start the game with the '-reset' launch option. It wipes everything though, and you'll have to set your profile up as well as any others again. Also, you'll probably want to clear it after you're done playing or it'll keep wiping your profile every time you start.

Took a quick look, couldn't find where the settings are stored yet.

Here's how you can reset the center.

Go to your main Steam folder and go to \userdata\[Your SteamID #]\641960\remote

Open the file with [#]_account.json

Find "roomOffset":{"x":[numbers],"y":[numbers],"z":[numbers]}". It'll be among the numbers for controllers offsets somewhere near the top. If you have multiple profiles set up in BoxVR, each person has their own room offset saved, so make sure you're changing the right one.

Replace the numbers with zeros and save.

Go into BoxVR, load your profile, and hit 'Recenter Room' ONCE, make due with it being close, but not perfect and NEVER ATTEMPT TO RECENTER THE ROOM EVER AGAIN.

That, or if you took the time, you could tweak the numbers manually to get it perfect.

This is fantastically helpful, thanks!

I too had the game unplayable due to the two recenter options both being outside of my play area, but thanks to your advice I was able to change the numbers directly to get it back in a good location. I can't imagine why they didn't just put a couple of sliders in the settings menu...
