Plans for a Linux release?
Hey guys,

Just wanted to know if you had plans to release a linux version for this? I personally don't care much for it but my work colleague is also a fan of kwads, and he told me he is pretty bad at contronlling them. Poor fella spend all of last winter building MULTIPLE kwads, but then when he tried them he found out it's harder than he expected and he's getting discouraged.

I used to fly in DRL back when it was a free Alpha (or Beta I don't remember), and I just got it on steam yesterday. I'm on Windows, but my colleague is on linux at home. I know DRL enough to be persuaded it would help him develop his skills, as the first time I flew a real racing/acrobatics drone after training in DRL Simulator, I was already pretty darn good with it. So I want my colleague to try this :P. If it could just make him more relaxed as he flies, not worrying about breaking anything, it would already help him a lot! That was the main thing sims helped me with. To not be scared to be aggressive on the sticks.

Thanks!

Hi Thunder86,

The dev team is looking at other platforms to release the sim on. Currently it's prioritizing consoles. I will share your feedback with them.

consoles??? You've got your priorities wrong my friend... Drone racing needs an actual radio. This is goin to be everything but a simulator if people play with console controllers... A linux release would be so much better than a console release...

Hi Thunder86,

I appreciate the passion in your response, but I don't understand why you think that the sim wouldn't be able to support transmitters on a console. USB has been a standard feature on consoles for years now.

Thanks!

Well if you can make it work, then yes :)

I assumed it wouldn't work as you can't just plug in any usb device as a controller on a console

All other drone simulators have a linux version. Made in one !!
Please !!

I think MS and Sony are a bit funny about which USB devices are supported on their consoles. It's not as simple as just plugging it in and expecting it to work.

Go ahead, connect your PPM/PWM/PAM signal to xinput converter (google: flysky usb) to a console and see what happens. Best case scenario you'll get an "unknown device" prompt, but my guess would be a console won't even be able to detect it.

USB is not some magical connector through which everything just works. Some devices are driverless, such as thumb drives, but most devices need drivers. Consoles have fixed drivers which don't include RC TX signal readers.

Only expensive RC TX that support xinput over USB might work, so the customer base will be again limited. Most people use radios that connects to a computer through the 3.5mm trainer port, or similar, which outputs a PPM signal.

Meanwhile, linux would be in every way the logical next step, especially since the game/simulator is on steam.

The funny thing is thumb drives need drivers too.
In fact I don't see why the devs couldnt implement transmitters as joysticks in the game just like the creators of: Rocksmith, Rock Band, Taiko no Tatsujin, Steel Battalion, Buzz!, Pokemon Lets Go!, Wii Fit, DDR, Donkey Konga, Rapala Pro Fishing, Farming Simulator etc (I could go on) implemented special controllers in theirs.
In fact I don't see why we couldn't get a wireless dongle with an option to add your own rx (like we do now with spacre FCs and RXes) on console.

That being said, it would indeed be wonderful if the devs decided to add linux support or at least Proton compatibility. As of now the game starts to a black screen in both proton 3.xx and 4.xx.

Thanks for your consideration

So... Devs, I simply want to point out that since your reply, absolutely nobody said "yay, DRL Sim on consoles!!!" and everybody said they would like to see a linux release. I honestly think the linux release IS the way to go. You do whatever... but the future of DRL simulator is on PC, not on consoles. A linux release is the logical next step, as I pointed out one and a half years ago ;)

I now exclusively use linux computers at work, and I dream of the day my entire steam library will be available on linux so I can finally switch from windows to linux at home too ;)

Depending on your library, it's very unlikely 100% of it will ever be native. 100% Linux support with the help of Proton will certainly take several more years at least.

Why wait? I made the full switch back in 2010 when the only way to run Steam in Linux was through Wine. Now, out of over 800 games in my library, over 500 support Linux, the vast majority of them native. Plenty to keep me occupied and happy for ages. I don't have much desire to play the other 300 because there's so much to do with the rest, but if I did, there's a decent chance they're unofficially supported by Proton or work in Wine.

I did notice another drone racing sim with native Linux support, though I haven't tried it, let alone DRL.

Would be amaizing if it was ported to Linux or worked with proton...

Anyway I moved to Liftoff. Its on steam as well. It's a way better sim, and it's available on linux.

I'm the one of the Linux guys who would like to see this game on Linux platform. My friends playing on Mac, but I'm also have switched to Liftoff because it supports Linux.

Liftoff is far superior anyway. I only wish they make more big environments like Hannover and Bando,
