how to freeplay

The lego games I am used to playing are old... and it appears that there have been lots of improvements since then. The problem is that things work differently and there really isn't any help on how to navigate the game.

So. How do you get into "freeplay", so you can re-do a level with different characters? When I go to the map and select a location, I get an option of "replay level", but that's just redoing it, not freeplaying it.

Well... answered my own question. You don't replay levels in "free play" mode like in previous versions of the LEGO games. You explore the level in the map (without the story or action)
