weapon proficiency?

i tried to buy a new weapon but its name is gray and it says i'm not proficient with the weapon. what does this mean and how do i become proficient? is this about the classes? if so, what is an advanced list and what is an excellent list?

Yes, it all boils down to your Advenuter's class. With the only "exception" of a Commoner who can change class once per play, you cannot become proficient in any other weapon/armor list by increasing your experience or attributes.
You may know in advance which class is proficient in which list by reading the class description when you create a new adventurer.
