What is the deal with the voice patch?
Okay, ok. I'm just sharing an opinion here...

So, I played Umineko No Naku Koro Ni without the PS3 sprites or the voice patch. I opted for the original sprites as well. Part of the reason is because I have a Mac, with no easy way to download mods without crashing my game (happened several times before I got mods to get my game to just function properly). However, I can kind of "hear" each of the characters voices in my head as I read their dialogue. The lack of voice acting also allows me to focus totally on the music and sound effects, which are the things I prize the most in almost all media. I have only heard snippets of the voice acting on YouTube, and I agree with the rest of the community that the voice acting is superb. But since I couldn't actually get it working for my Mac, and I've already read and enjoyed the entirerity of the question arcs without them, I wonder if it really is necessary for me to download them at some point (not now, because I don't have a PC, and I REALLY don't want to mess up the answer arcs' data file less than an hour in the game and then be forced to play it on another computer or device apart from my personal laptop that I use mostly (a mid-2012 Mac Pro).

So I guess what I'm wondering is if any of you are doing the same thing or understand where I'm coming from? I'm making this post because so many people talk about the PS3 mods that it makes me what wonder other Umineko fans think of just playing the game how it was originally packaged.

Personally, I must say that watching the Umineko anime first and then reading the question arcs has quite literally changed my life. I was inspired to write my first novel, have a greater sympathy for human beings, no matter how "bad" they may seem, read more in general, helped me make a decision to not be as selfish as I was, recognize that love really is one of the most powerful things in the universe, take the difference between fantasy and reality much more seriously than I had previously, and even helps me have conversations with my Mom, whom my relationship with had been very strained until recently. Umineko has had one of the greatest positive influences in my life, and I'm so excited to read the answer arcs!

Are any of you reading Umineko as it was originally packaged? If not, what are your opinions on what I've described here?

I think you're worrying too much about it. The game was packaged without voice and it worked just fine without voice, and even if it wasn't you can choose to play it however you please. Personally I play with voice and it's weird for me to try otherwise. But if you play without voice and enjoying what you are getting out of it then let no one try to tell you otherwise.

I play without the voice patch, because I feel like 1) the voices drag the pace too much and 2) the extra audio makes Umineko seem more like a show than a book. I can concentrate better on reading a story, rather than watching it, but that's just personal preference.
Oh, and for me, this is a re-read... but then again, the first time I also experienced Umineko without voices (and with the original art). I tried playing with the patch at some point, but just couldn't get into it, for the aforementioned reasons.

I'd say try experiencing the game both ways for a short while if you can and then decide to do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Don't think that's available for the answer Arc yet. Game been out for only a few days. Give it a few more.

without voice ... lol ? voices are the best acted in a visual novel EVER .... the screams haunt me even now ... JESUS !

With other novels (except muv luv second part) i get the usual cookie cutter voices nothing special or bad ... With this novel i feel the quality of a movie within the voice actors performance .... Its creepy and engrossing.

sorry for the bad english, it's not my first langage^^
I play with the original sprites (I like the expressions more) and without the voices patch. I prefer imagining the voices and intonations in my head. I prefer visual novels without voice acting for that reason. The voices spoil the experience and the emotions in my case, because they are not how I would imagine them.

Completely agree with you!!!!!!!! I'm playing a VN right now with voices and...while it's kinda cool to hear the expressions, overall, it's super annoying. I'd rather hear what they sound like in my head! I have heard some things in my head that no voice actor could probably do anyway, hahahaha. Ryukishi07 is such a good writer, he gives us all of what we would need to hear how this characters sound like, as well as what they actually say.
I finished the manga first before the VN. I play songs from VNs bgm folder while reading the manga. total immersion
good bye golden witch Beatrice

Would you recommend reading manga or playing VN? I'm a very slow reader so I'm afraid if I can handle Umineko while I'd like to take all of the story there is.

The VN experience is the greatest. Even with some external assets included while reading the manga it won't be the same. Trust me I checked out both, the manga is amazing too but it doesn't compare with the VN. (Also if you get the VN don't forget to apply the PS3 patch from "07th mod" website for voice acting, PS3 sprites and backgrounds and other assets.)
