If you think about it realistically Rika must always be drunk or hungover at some point

Bern's not a lookalike, though... She is Rika--though Rika is not her, knows nothing about her, even. She ascended from Rika (as EVA-Beatrice ascended from Eva, etc) the moment she escaped the endless loop that was Higurashi, which was apparently a Logic Error (Lambda says that she and Bern are the only Witches she knows of to ever have made it out of one). This was considered a miracle (at one point I believe it was likened to a cat having to walk on a typing machine until she had written the entirety of Shakespeare, or something along those lines), and so she was granted the title of Witch of Miracles--likely by Featherine, whose piece was Hanyuu.

Featherine is implied to be the most powerful Witch in Umineko by far. It seems that when playing that gameboard, she intentionally handicapped herself, simply to keep her occupied. I personally believe her opponent was Lambda--not because she kinda looks like Takano (though iirc it is mentioned somewhere that Lambda gave her her blessing); but because it would explain her interest in and fondness of Bern: she'd been watching 'her' for a long time, after all, and then she managed to ascend to the status of a Witch! Gasp! How very interesting, how very not boring!

The thing is that when Bern ascended from Rika, the only things she took from her were the culmination of all the fear, pain, hate--basically every negative emotion Rika had ever experienced over every single timeline--which is a lot. Skinned alive without anesthesia, anyone? Suicide by stabbing oneself in the neck? And that's just some of the few things we know of. Rika dies in every single timeline, and we know she'd been in there for decades.

Tl;dr: Bern is Rika's evil Witch form. :bern:
Thanks, I really appreciate the effort you put in typing all this and I am honestly the same when I see a comment that rubs me the wrong way but I literally knew all of this. I meant like, generally speaking when you look at all the stuff Ryukishi's made.

I am just referring to this (even though you can argue about the technicalities from the first four):

Ah, apologies, I thought you might be someone semi-new to the series, hence the elaborate explanation--you really didn't rub me the wrong way or anything :)

I think the first four aren't really worth arguing about, actually, since Bern is the same character (minus positive qualities) as Rika, so it's only logical she'd look extremely similar once ascended as Witch. EVA retained her looks as well, after all, she just got a costume change (and a serious dose of sadism). As for Erika, Bern specifically made her in her image. At the end of EP5, when she's berating Erika for being beaten by Battler and being such an awful piece, she says how she 'even gave her the honour of having her own blue hair', and, if I remember correctly (I could be wrong here, don't have access to my PC rn, but I seem to recall something along these lines--if not then, then during one of the other many Bern-tears-down-Erika moments), even says, 'you, who I made in my image!' before the previous line.

Furude Rika, Frederika, Furudo Erika... in the end, they're all linked, so I find it logical for them to look similar. And imo, apart from the hair, Erika looks quite different from the others: her outfit looks radically different, frills and details all over, has completely different colours, and she even wears an elaborate headpiece, which neither of the other two do.

Also, tape.

The last two I'm not familiar with, though I want to read Rose Guns Days sometime, but... yeah, the last one is a straight-up Bernkastel copy in a different outfit. The sixth... well, in itself 'long, dark, blue/purplish hair', either full-out or black and tinted, is a very common trope for certain character types (Homura instantly comes to mind, the yandere from School Days, Satsuki from Kill la Kill--not restricted to girls either, Yuri Lowell from the Tales series has purple hair). I don't know anything about her personality, however, she may indeed be very similar to Bernkastel (would rather have no spoilers, as I said, I intend to read it still, haha). But she most definitely has at least one thing Bern lacks: boobs :') :2016butterfly:

It's fine, no worries! I'm glad I didn't, phew.

Good point on everything you got covered, I don't have much to comment about it. 0: And you're remembering correctly on that one line, no worries there! At the very least, I remember that line too, so you're not likely hallucinating about it.

Going offtopic a bit but it really reminds me of how Ryukishi once said that everyone's hair colors aren't actually how they appear, and that they're only colored differently from one another to make it easier to tell the other apart or something like that. Wonder if its related to how Erika's hair color is actually not blue...

It's okay though I'm not very familiar with the last two either. I've read a tiny bit on Rose Gun Days, but I didn't even get far enough to reach Philip/Battler's lookalike so it's not like I can comment or even spoil much. THOUGH HONESTLY, I feel like this is a lot more debatable since Stella looks a whole lot more like Featherine though. I swear the only reason why Stella is in the Rika Reference category is because she hangs out with the Tiny-Bit-More-Obvious Takano reference. That, and the person that was placed in the Hanyuu Reference category had an alliteration in her name like Featherine. But?? Who knows maybe they both fit in the Hanyuu category.

(Here's the post I'm talking about for reference btw: http://ramblingsofthegoldenwitch.tumblr.com/post/146865308602/007-expansion-crossover-world-out-of-fun-ive )

Wasn't it implied by Bern that Lambadelta might be connected to Sakoto somehow? In the scene in the 8th ep with the after party, Lambadelta says a riddle ''what cake is left if you eat all the cake'' prefaced with a math problem that Sakoto was tricked by in Higurashi, only for Bern to say right after ''None. That's a riddle you were tricked with once, isn't it?'' Is Lambadelta a witch ver of Sakoto?

Also I love Bern more as a concept but love Erika more as a character :)

No. Lambda is the witch version of Takano Miyo, or more accurately, Lambda is the original and Miyo is her created pawn, like Erika is to Bernkastel

I thought Bern was created from a cat? I am aware of her existence in Higurashi and how she is some kind of creation of Rika.

Hmm one is adorable and says cute stuff like "Nipah" and the other is a sadomasochistic troll who torments people in the worst ways she can because she's bored. I'd say I like them both equally.
BLANDON Feb 6, 2021 @ 8:22pm
Well Frederika is a good character too. A tragic one. I hope she can redeem herself.
O5 Oct 9, 2022 @ 9:17am
Gotta go with the sadomasochistic sociopath troll cuz she’s more relatable to me. I love Rika-chama too tho
