King's Bounty: Crossworlds

King's Bounty: Crossworlds

Good class for beginner to KB?
I just picked up KB yesterday (Crossworlds and Legends in a bundle with a couple other games). I have played HoMM 3, 5, 6, and 7 before (and dabbled in the others), but I am a newbie to KB, starting with Crossworlds.

I started a game as a mage, but got kind of beat up by the first set of monsters after the "tutorial" (bugs as I was entering a forest near the Academy). Is playing a mage difficult for a beginner to KB with my background? Or, do I simply need to abandon my HoMM ways and deal with taking heavier troop losses? I would prefer a class with magic, but would Paladin be a better class for my first time through? Advice please!

Disregard--I figured out my problem. I can add skills even before I go into the first battle! Problem solved now--making great progress with my mage! Up to level 4, and got the +15% damage skill, with my eye on the 2 uses of spellbook skill soon after a couple more level-ups :) What a great game!

I have heard warrior is easiest, but to me it would be the least fun. :) Having such a good time with this game, though, that I will probably play all 3 classes...but maybe save warrior for my 3rd playthrough on the hardest difficulty. What a gem! Are all of the new KB games similar to this one? Because it is a blast!

i think this one has the slight edge over the others, but The Legens is also very good, didnt try the other ones yet, too many games to play.

The LEgend is the first in the series, mage in that game seems to be optimal, this is the 2nd game plus addon, warrior seems to be the best because of the dragon companion and warrior rage bonus.

At some point ill try the darkside game to play someone evil xD

1. If you play Legend, do not play Paladin, they are weak when compare with Mage and Warrior.
2. Depend on your playstyle, the difficulty, and you want a no loss playthrough or not :D
- If you want an army can deal at least 200.000dmg each turn, finish a boss in less than 5 turn, or a single stack Ske Archer kills 30 Black Dragon in 1 hit, Warrior is your choice.
- If you want an army look extremely weak, but always the one winning after the battle, go with Mage. Do not use some overpowered trick ppl use like Invisibility Green Dragon, play the game on Impossible and no loss, you will see King's Bounty is a truly STRATEGIC GAME.
- I always considered Paladin is weakest class, until I see the Armageddon Black Knight combination. Too OP.

Sorry for my bad English !!!

I suggest playing Legend first, then Crossworlds. The ending of Legends ties into the begining of Crossworlds, so if you play them backwards it makes less sense in the overall story.

...Mage is optimal? I mean, if you know how to do it right, sure. In terms of having the edge over combat in the "You NEED this" sense e.g. Resurrection, heal(sort of) and disabling/enabling spells(Slow, Haste, perhaps fear if you use it right). If you play Warrior, you generally just brute-force everything and use scrolls UNLESS you want to try and balance your skills between might mind and magic, which is pretty damn hard when you realise that the magic tree if something you have dedicate to or know exactly what skills you want to buy. Crossworlds/Armoured Princess makes this easier since they removed, for example, the skill that lets you upgrade acolytes into inquisitors and the skill that lets you have demons/undead in your army without morale loss. So, really, Warrior is about maxing your attack/defense, depending on how you want to play. Lots of people will still tell you to hybrid to get useful skill upgrades but it's pretty stupid to try that. You have to be absolutely sure you want level 3 order / attack magic before you go into it, otherwise you're just wasting precious runes.

I wouldn't say the game is about strategy in the first moments of the game, as shops are randomized and you won't get important spells straight off if the odds are against you. I'm playing a Warrior right now and I still haven't found a resurrection scroll and all of my unit spawns are pretty iffy. Honestly, I'm not great at the games but it doesn't take an idiot to see that if something isn't there, you can't use it and thus' strategy is a mute point, especially since a lot of the skills in both games (legends and princess) are pretty useless in your average battle (peaceful pfahahahah)

Also, be prepared to be told you have to restart if you "didn't play properly". That always gives me a good laugh.

The biggest offender in the balance is the medals. If you grind them early on, especially the leadership one, then the game becomes consequently easier because you do more damage with more units, thus making it easier to get higher ranks of the medal. And maybe around mid-late game you can stop replaying the fights just because you've lost 1 peasant. Honestly, lowering the requirement to "80-85% of the original" would make the early game far less grindy, while still requiring to care about losses.

For "The Legend":

Paladin is the easiest to play, but they don't end up as strong as the other two. Starts out with resurrection and heal in Legends, and the mind skill tree gives bonuses to gold and exp and eventually lets you trade mind runes for the other 2 types of runes, so in theory the Paladin should end every run fully optimized even with some poor play on the player's part. Problem is the mind skill tree does very little to actually make you stronger. Also both his unique skills are pretty garbage, with Runic Stone more or less just letting you make up for what you wasted in the mind skill tree.

Warrior get's a huge bonus to leadership and rage, and can equip 2 weapon items (4 with one of the wifes) so he can pretty much 1 shot everything. You really don't need to put a whole lot of effort into being OP with the Warrior.

Mage get's 2 spell casts per turn for 3 turns and overall the magic skill tree is probably the best of the 3. Very easy to end the majority of battles with your unit's barely even engaging the enemy. However low leadership and magic dependence can make the game a pain at parts. Surprisngly easy early game though as he starts with fireball and most early game enemies are weak to fire.

For "Legend", I am not too far along, but I haven't figured out Rage. It is pretty obvious what it does in Crossworlds, but less obvious (at least in the beginning) in Legend. Am I missing something?

Until you do a certain quest, I think it only gives a small passive benefit to your crit rate. Eventually you get an item that lets you use rage for summons. Overall not very important compared to the Warrior's ability to use 2 weapons and higher leadership.

Also rage goes down over time when you aren't in battle, just as mana goes up. So multiple consequetive battles one after another will tend to result in you starting each battle with high rage and lower mana.

Personally for The Legend, I find the Mage to be far more powerful later on. But the Warrior can get absurd damage each stack in lategame thanks to his potentially high attack stat and high leadership. If I recall correctly, a high attack stat can result in up to 300% extra damage that stacks with the crit bonus (600% bonus total) and his high leadership means that the stacks will have a higher base damage as well, combine with Bless and he can usually gurantee a one hit kill on most enemies later on.

The Paladin kind of lags behind by comparison since he can't cast 2 spells in one turn, and can't get even remotely close to the warriors damage. Mind skill tree is also kind of lackluster, and while he starts with resurrection, it's possible to aquire later in the game (with some luck) anyway. Still a fairly easy class as long as you aren't playing on Hard or Impossible.
