Also - the two inventories are split until later on in the game; though both characters can get the Encounter + Trouble finders via side stuff. Once both characters are doing the business "stuff", you will eventually meet "Mr.Billionare" or whatever that then will be a middle man for inventory/money.
You can also change at will later I believe (not that far yet - but I met the guy as Goro already).
I dunno, man. The second I did that substory and was presented with a choice I was running to the internet to see which one I should take. As someone who seems concerned about missables, I'd think you should be equally diligent. If you're going to be this obsessive about it like me, then you should take better precautions. #1 rule of completionism is looking up missables.
Also, you get the Finder from the second Miracle Johnson substory, not the first one. There's a second one in the disco and it's not available until certain plot events are completed. Given this seems to be the first time you were switched to Majima, it's possible you didn't actually miss it since the second MJ mission isn't even available until after you'd been Majima a few times.

Also, was mentioned, both characters get an Encounter Finder. The one for Majima is much easier to get as it's just from a mission where you help a guy cross a bridge and is available for him very early in his story. If you struggle with the mission, get a Slime/Zap gun and mow them all down.
