Is the combat system better in the other games?
I wanna play through the entire series, but the awful combat system is giving me second thoughts here.

Normal fights are won after 5 seconds, stunlocking everything even with the most basic moves. Bosses are more annoying than anything, because they stunlock me and I cant use my guardbreaks on them for some reason and have to hope for them to not auto-block to start a combo. Every 3rd hit from me and the enemies go into thin air because no one can face their opponents properly and enemies keep animation-skipping, like starting a combo while still laying on the floor.

Right now Im escorting Makoto and I kept getting locked into fancy breakdance-poses, while she was getting attacked.

I've played 0-3 and playing the fourth one now, and I also think that combat kinda sucks.

Lots of things knock / stun you, and there are plenty of fights that feel like playing a fighting game vs a dude that spams one broken move. And there are ways to break system the other way around like infinite weapons (though im not sure if there are any in 0), which also doesn't result in compelling gameplay.

It gets a little better in a way, that you lvl up and open a bit more options and figure out what works and what not. The first fight with Kuze was probably the lowest point for me in turms of how I had no consumables, dealt no dmg and it was just a terrible grind with little room for mistakes. It gets better then that.

In other games I've played it is kinda same but a bit different, but still mostly the same. The styles come and go, but key issues stay.

Despite all of this I loved 0, and the others too, though not as much, though the fourth one may be getting up there. And it is based purely on story, characters, absurdity and spectacles. So for me it's one of the best games with one of the worst gameplays, and I found my peace with it and accepted it for what it is.

So I'd suggest to finish 0's story, and see for yourself how much you'll like it. If it doesn't hit you, I'd say there is no reason to play 1, 2, 3 and 4. I would assume the same for the rest of them that I haven't played myself (but I'm going to).

Skill issue.

You’re still at the beginning if you’re just now doing the escort mission and don’t know how to use each style well

^For combat it strongly depends on what version of 2 you played.

Cause Kiwami 2's combat is worse than Original 2s.
yeah it was Kiwami

Just went to the trainer for breaker style and I had to use this janky dodge against enemies with tazers. Training ended up being waiting for the stun to end, then spamming X to get back up essentially. Heat goes down too, so I have to attack again, but careful to not go to 3rd level because the move only works on 2. Got the first of 5 of these moves after 2 minutes or so with luck... like, who thought these are fun mechanics in a hectic fighting game? lmao

I was playing for the story too, but forcing me through this gameplay... no. Thanks for your reply, though.

The issue with Kiwami 2 is mainly the level ups, and the new engine problems like the ragdolls.

Original 2 is generally more precise. And I prefer playing it since it has one extra location they cut, and the art style/music sounds more fitting. Compared to the green filter + weird music choices during some big moments

OP's only issue seems to be with the difficulty. Did he put it on one of the Hard modes?

Personally I found the combat easy no matter what mode it was. It's not meant to be a hard game.
