Frustrating Fighting Mechanics.
1. The game does not respond to 90% of your inputs.
1.b Pressing toward an enemy will not actually cause you to face or attack an enemy in that direction. You will only attack whatever enemy the game wants you to hit, which is usually none, or whatever one is the worst one because it allows the others to hit you. GOTO 2.
2. Enemies gang-bang you non-stop. No way to get out of it.
3. Every single thing you do gets interrupted by enemies. Flying kick? Enemy will punch air, and you will get hit. GOTO 2. Comboing enemy and pressing Y to drop him? Enemy will punch you GOTO 2.
4. Guard is worthless. Enemies attack, break through with a strong attack in a few hits. If they don't break through and you try to hit them in between their attacks, after your first punch the enemies will force you to GOTO 2.
5. Dodge is literally worthless, even in Rush Style. Rush Style has literally ONE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ job - to allow you to dodge quickly after attacking. You punch three times then try to dodge, you get hit because dodge doesn't work. GOTO 2. Okay try only pressing attack (X) twice then dodge, sorry dodge doesn't respond. GOTO 2. Fine, fine. Press attack only once then quickly mash dodge, literally nothing happens except you getting hit. GOTO 2.
6. Lock on must be held, meaning your focus is diverted, and your hand muscles are cramped so you can't use the buttons as well. GOTO 1.
7. The camera is garbage. You can't see the enemy much of the time, in part because of 6 and locking on doesn't give a view of enemy. GOTO 1.
8. Your character will stand there 2 feet in front of the enemy throwing punches into the air in front of them. You can't ever tell if you're in range because of 7. GOTO 2. Or even if you're well within range, you sit there attacking slightly to the side of an enemy.
9. Press Y while an enemy is on the ground in front you, while you have 3 bars of Heat... kick the air near them and completely miss, instead of finishing him off.)
10. Enemies can attack from 2x range it seems like they should.
11. In Punchout Artist minigame area so small challenger lunges at you before you get control of your character. Not that you really have control.
12. In Punchout Artist, # 7 make sit literally impossible to survive even 10 seconds. If you dodge the first lunge, you literally can't see the enemy. You must then take several seconds to turn, press camera to face it toward the challenger. But you literally can't see him because Kiryu & spectators block your camera & view of challenger.

The only good thing about this game is the wacky side story, and main story. The entire rest of the games mechanics are complete ♥♥♥♥ show. I've never played a game so unresponsive and malfunctional. This game makes Dark Souls look like a game with a good camera, lockon, responsiveness, and timely response... and DS is just false difficulty because it has horrible all those things. It's not actually a difficult game.

The beginning of the game, before you kick Kuze's ultra-80's ass the combat worked semi-kinda-okay. After that, the game just tells you that none of your button presses will be responded to, none of your commands followed.

Top that with the fact that EVERY save point has a fight group camping it... ARG.
At least (other than fighting Mr Stealyourshit. I forget his real name) you can just select Try Again, a feature they put in knowing their fighting mechanics is garbage.

Got anymore to add to that list of bad takes?
Wait, games dont require you to hold the lock on button? I must be playing the wrong type of games

This is bait. Most of what you typed is objectively false. Either that or you're unbelievably bad at this game, which is an achievement on its own

Dark Souls 2, Nioh, and Monster Hunter, which all have similar lock-on/camera issues to each other, they all have a barely functional lock on that doesn't require you to hold the button, or to press the camera button to force it to face the enemy you want to fight.

(DS and MH games all have laggy / slow weapons. MH has oversized weapons to lore-wise excuse it, but both games can also be a bit unresponsive at times. Still... I love MH games. IMO Nioh is way better than DS2 because super responsive controls and quick combat make regular mobs FUN to fight, while still keeping you on your toes and wrecking you hard if you get sloppy.)

Like I said: In Ch1 of Yakuza 0, these problems weren't as bad, but in Ch2 they somehow exponentially magnified. When the controls work, some of the fights seem a bit easy, when they decide not to, they seem basically impossible. I guess I should just stock up on HP+Heat pots galore and use them like an addict. I'm not sure what happened.
I'm fighting those "Men in Black" most often. I have all the abilities in the 2 fighting styles that cost 2m Yen or less, can't afford the 30m yen ones yet.

I'm really enjoying most other parts of the game.

I'd record my play, but that would be worse than pointless, because there's no way to on-screen show what buttons I'm pressing and when, so all people would see is the BS nonsense of the character NOT dodging, not making contact with enemies, and getting gang-banged between enemies. Or when it does actually dodge, it doesn't necessarily go the direction I want.

I'm going to edit the word "literally" from the first line, as it was hyperbole.

I did. It has the best stats of any non-body item I can equip so far.
I figured it was causing the enemies to run toward me to fight. Does it affect their behavour in battle as well?
(edit: Yes, it does.)

I quit playing for a while until i came across a forum post having the same issue. Damn thing should come with a massive red warning :)
Solkin Apr 29, 2021 @ 6:04am
well there are lots of cluncky and obnixious mechanisms in this game. the fact that an ennemy is able to turn 180° while doing a stabbing attack with a weapon is completly stupid, for starter. And the lock on is indeed garbage.

its best to just look up items stats before equiping it, this is the FIRST mistake as a beginner and this is very common

You're doing it wrong.
