Expect to find a lot of cutscenes and dialogs with plot twists from the moon and badass moments, a lot of violent and terribly fun fights, and a huge content of mini-games. The world you evolve is really small (district size), but there always something to do.
As my english's pretty bad, I think this guy will explain better than me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJVJX6G9cCA
And if you want a longer gameplay trailer of this Yakuza 0:

I like the sidequest in Yakuza 4 where you berate a single mother for not selling her body to make ends meet for her child, or the one where you have to convince a business owner to indiscriminately fire employees so his profits will go up with the mission wrapping up with the moral of "If it increases profits who cares if you ruin a few lives". Mind you neither of these are played for yucks and are legit "this is how you should live" kind of moments.
These games are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy.
I find that way less crazy than the weird Japanese morals of some side missions. Its kind of a shock how they are always presented like the end of an episode of happy days where everyone gathers around and talks about what they learned.
"I learned something today, I shouldnt let the financial stability of one of my employee get in the way of increased profits"
♥♥♥♥'s wacky yo.
What makes this different from games like Sleeping Giants and GTA is that you are not blanetly a criminal. You sorta can't kill people (i.e. "Kiryu didnt kill anybody meme") , you don't steal cars, and you can't use/sell drugs. Rather you are a guy that does things that are not done by the general public, ranging from frowned upon by Japanese society, to criminal. Basically the point of the game is to do the right thing in a seedy Japanese criminal world. Sometimes the results are sad, brutal, weird, interesting, mundane, serious, or hilarious.
The game itself is basically a beat em up. I wouldn't call Yakuza a very technical beat em up, but the actual fighting is fun, easy to learn, and engaging.
The real meat and potatoes of this game is just doing stuff. Beat up some random thugs, go through the story, maybe do some bowling, or gambling or video gaming. Mix and repeat. All in the service of learning to be the greater man in a low world.
No you can't attack civilians. Fights begin like RPG: you meet thugs thugs/hooligans/yakuza in the street, they call you for a fight, and a sort of "closed battle arena" is formed by civilians watching you beat them all.
Like in this video: https://youtu.be/1pavSCrA_pI?t=26m25s
(as you can see, a crowd of watchers is blocking the exits during the fight)
For the main story gameplay is pretty straightforward, get to the destination, watch custscene, might be a fight or two with mobs or boss, go to another destination, see another cutscene... and so on and so forth.
The side content however, has a lot of variation in it. Different kind of minigames, funny subtories to experience, random mobs to fights and torture, real estate business mission, managing cabaret clubs.
So yeah that would depend on what you do in the game yourself, focusing only on the main story will make it seems repetitive. Take some time with the side content for variations.
For the color effect that cannot be disabled I'm afraid, those are the staple of the Yakuza series. Especially the aura that indicates you're currently in HEAT mode.
