I remember that there was someone else in one of the yakuza boards with the same problem. The only known fix is not to unplug your headphones or speakers during gameplay.
I believe the reason why it crashes is that the game can't handle switching to a different audio source midgame. This is actually quite common, but usually games won't crash, they just won't play any sound anymore.

A tip for the future: save often, so you won't lose so much progress, if something goes wrong.

turns out its from the audio source switching midgame, this is a vastly reported problem with windows 10, usually id just lose audio until a restart, but lately its been crashes with certain games that are ports like persona and yakuza.

LOL so what i lied?
I was actually experiencing the same issue with my HyperX Cloud 2 headset. I noticed that the crashes occurred when the headset was unplugged while connected to my computer through my USB sound card. What Troco and 7itr0n3ng5mäck detailed appears to be the reason. An easy solution would be to plug your headset through your PC's audio jack as it won't register as a different audio device, effectively preventing crashes on unplugs (I tried multiple times and it works).

Dude. . .

You totally made an entirely different game playable for me again. Thank you for this nugget of knowledge.

rule #3 of gaming = save often. make a habit to save at least every hour.
