I think you got that the other way around.
The mobile game was promoting the new series protagonist.
(*Game is currently referred to on the RGG Studio site as 『龍が如く最新作』 which means something like "Like a Dragon latest work")
Shin RGG = umm.... New Yakuza !!
Yakuza 4 has 4 playable characters: Kiryû, Akiyama (a moneylender whose connections to the yakuza differ from the usual "paying protection money to work in their territory" deal), Saejima Taiga (seen in Majima's flashbacks in Zero -- in fact, Zero somewhat spoilers his arc in 4) and Tanimura, a corrupt cop.
The non-canon zombie shooter Yakuza Dead Souls (Ryū ga Gotoku OF THE END) also has 4 playable characters: Kiryū, Majima, Akiyama and Goda Ryūji (who we meet as a younger version in Zero).
Yakuza 5 (aka Ryū ga Gotoku 5: Yume, Kanaeshi mono) has 5 playable characters: besides Kiryû, Akiyama and Saejima return & are joined by Shinada, a baseball player forced out of the major leagues after being implicated in a match-fixing / betting scandal, and Kiryū's adopted daughter Haruka.
There were also a couple of spin-offs on PSP (Kurohyō: Ryū ga Gotoku Shinshō and its sequel) with an independent cast, but these never released outside Japan & are mostly ignored even by those western series fans who keep pestering Sega about Ishin! and Kenzan!
EDIT: clarity and macrons
