The first time you are sent to a phone is much later in the game, after the Ramen shop and you have to go call Dojima HQ. But the thing about that is when you have the "contact Dojima HQ" objective then the phones normal use is overridden. When you use the phone it triggers a cutscene where you talk to Dojima HQ. Once that is finish you are back in control of Kiryu. You will only know that phones are for saving if you manually interact with the phone a second time. I've actually suggested that they should put a simple popup notice at the very start (at 9:04 in the video below) that tells you that the phones like the one nearby is for saving. This subject comes up way too often so i think it might help out people who are new to this style of game saving.

I ended up finding that one after I posted my comment and restarting but in all honesty it's sort of a pointless save point since there's still a couple of more fight tutorials, a karaoke mini-game and a whole bunch of cut scenes between it and the next save point. If a game is going to use manual save points, which I don't really like but I also don't hate, then at the very least a "Save and Exit" command would be nice too.
Thats cause he *was* on a date **wink wink** **nods** **wink wink wink** **smiles** **wink wink eyelid twitching wink wink**
Lose your mind enough to necro a post over two and a half years old?
So the big bold "S" on the minimap didn't immediately make you think "that might be a save point"?
