I've completed Sleeping Dogs (entire game) twice and am now on Chapter 3 of Yakuza 0.

I'd definitely recommend both as being very good games although each to my eyes have flaws.

So far Sleeping Dogs has the tighter story. Also Yakuza 0 has hugely long cut scenes - minutes at a time. I honestly think Yakuza 0 would have been better with focussed editing on the cut scenes because there's a substantial degree of repetition.

Character wise so far Sleeping Dogs edges it. There's an issue over Sleeping Dog's characters being very much archetypes and Yakuza 0 has a wider character roster although for my tastes too many characters are extremely quirky.

Sleeping Dogs has driving which Yakuza 0 does not. Sleeping Dogs also seems to have a far wider accessible and varied area.

However Yakuza 0 has a lot more going on. I agree with an earlier post that Yakuza 0's Japan feels far more "real" than Sleeping Dog's Hong Kong which feels like a play taking place against a facade. There's a lot to see but almost all of it is inaccessible whilst Yakuza 0 has baseball games, a pool hall, a games arcade, and a Shogo player (discovered so far) all of which are interactive.

I've had problems with my X Box for PC controller cutting out mid game in Yakuza 0 to my great frustration and annoyance which I haven't had with any other game.

Yakuza 0's run of the mill fights which involve getting attacked in the street by various factions of three easily beaten heavies from which you get cash are less grounded in "reality" than Sleeping Dogs.

However Yakuza 0 has far, far more complex character combat builds than Sleeping Dogs.

Both in the sales (big one expected end of the month) are very competitively priced and I would recommend both. Neither are flawless, and as a Westerner with no Oriental languages the streets feel exotic and strange with no way to understand the language on the many colourful signs.

But yeah, strongly recommended but so far I'm waiting for a game with this setting that will challenge Skyrim or Witcher 3.

S.x.
I would argue characters have way more depth in yakuza 0. Not to mention the side content is why more interesting then anything in sleeping dogs.

Have to call bs bud, yeah most of the side missions have very little cut scenes but in sleeping dogs you break up a human trafficking ring, hold people hostage, and jump out of fricking cars that have bombs before they explode in succession, the highlights of Yakuza feel like the kind of thing that sleeping dogs has tacked on for fun.

Yakuza and Sleeping dogs both have great stories, Yakuza wins by a hair there maybe.

Sleeping Dogs has better combat, and not just by a hair. It's more responsive, more fluid, 1 button counters akin to batman. If you come from a game like Batman where it's uncomfortable to EVER get hit, Yakuza will take some getting used to. Yakuza 0 does have more visually arresting "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" moments though.

Yakuza 0 kills Sleeping Dogs mercilessly in every other category other than main story and combat. I can't describe just how true this is, all the added features make a robust game like Sleeping Dogs actually seem hollow and lacking. It takes a great game to roll up a giant list concepts that might appear disjointed or unfun, and proceed to make nearly all of them very fun as well as fit right into the world.

Yakuza 0 overall value is higher to me, but both are very good games.
Wrong

The main story is what you should come for, and also the side quests are like stuff ripped out of fanfiction.

After completing the 1st chapter of yakuza, i can say that sleeping dogs was a much better and modern game for me, i think they can be compared and sleeping dogs wins in almost every department.
I like Sleeping Dogs better in some ways and Yakuza more in others. Sleeping Dogs has a better game world with driving, better character movement, etc. Yakuza has better characters, music, sidequests, voice acting, and story.

The combat is a matter of preference, do you like Tekken style fighting (Yakuza) or Arkham Asylum meets The Punisher game from the og xbox (Sleeping Dogs)?

No comparison in terms of Music sleeping dogs crushes yakuza (I fought the law, All out of love, reeling in the years etc.)

Jesus where Sleeping Dogs is better in combat it has zero tatic involved just punch away put the autobio item and a hard dificulty i dare anyone to come you just simply pressed the punch button and won aganist the cannon fodder and where batman has a good combat ?(you punch and counter rinse and repeat) The boss fights are fun but the mechanic in itself sucks every fighting Style has its own characteristic Beast fight with overwhelming strenght, Boxer to win using speed and Brawler for a mid term

Look Yakuza is a small open world game in a meaning that it's open world is small but is packed with content and every side thing is diferent unlike some games(cof AC cof) from arcade games to telephone clubs(laugh so hard how kiryu overreact to answer the phone or when he loses a car race) you will deal with a lot of backtrack.....UNLIKE....Sleeping Dogs that is a fun game but feels the same like every other open world game
Sleeping dogs has delivered the most enjoyable open world experience this decade aside from GTA V and Red Dead 2, more activities does not mean a better game, and yeah just try to hit the punch button and watch yourself spend 12 hours trying to get to level 2, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sleeping dogs in terms of hand to hand combat is only rivaled by the batman Arkham games, Yakuza copy pasted street fighter and it doesn't fit at all with the feel or the tone it seems to be trying to set.

Why, because Sleeping Dogs has/stars Asians? Lol.

Elements of Yakuza exists in GTA across the board but like I said before, the closest games to Yakuza are its inspiration, Shenmue, with a touch of Way of the Samurai. It has similar graphical fidelity and 3rd person camera to GTA but that's basically where the similarities stop in terms if parallels that don't exist across all games of that genre or similar (including the aforementioned).

Yakuza is hard to describe - it's an RPGesque story driven cinematic minor life-sim investigative beat'em'up with QTEs and fighting game mechanics padded (in a good way) with a ton of optional but worthy side content and distraction.

Seriously... One minute you could be beating the hell (or cash) out of Yakuza bosses involved in some crazy subterfuge with some of the flashiest looking combat of this genre; and the next you could be training a dominatrix, singing karaoke, playing Space Harrier in an arcade or racing little kids with battery powered customizable pocket race cars on electric hot wheel tracks (or a hell of a lot more).

This is why it's not really GTA despite seeming similar on the surface - it's a whole lot of content packed very tightly in a smaller package rather than a good amount of content spread thinly across a large package (though GTAV does add quite a lot), with a heavy emphasis on the RPG elements that coexist with its combat and freedom. Open world is replaced by Sandbox with some Themepark elements.

Tone and feel can also be somewhat compared to maybe the Dead Rising franchise (the first two) as well. Serious overarching story (more so in Yakuza) with crazy, seemingly random side content packed everywhere - another similarity with Dead Rising 1&2 is the sort of "arcadey" feel of the game, due to how flashy it is despite some of its darker tones (you literally beat cash out of enemies). It...sort of has a Capcom feel to it with its juxtaposition of gamey, random and often hilarious fun alongside a serious story and badass characters.
Dude what are you talking about with the stars Asians thing and I'm sorry I just feel yakuza was ridiculous with out exploring all the possibilities or having fun with how over the top it could be

How's about playing more then 1 chapter? Based on that logic I can compare sleeping dog after 2 hours of play.
fair enough

That's not what I was getting at, to make a fair comparison op should play both games completely to make a fair assessment considering the first chapter is just an introduction. Sub stories, activities don't show up until chapter 2 onwards. Plus he stated it beat Yakuza in every department, how can one make that claim from an introductory chapter?
It's a claim that's completely untrue into the bargain, were there even any characters to get invested in with Sleeping Dogs? Nishitani was barely in Yakuza and i cared more about him than anyone in Sleeping Dogs, there's a huge difference in quality of characters. The story is also unique, being that it revolves around real estate with a lot of twists and turns. Sleeping Dogs on the other hand was very cliche and predictable. The Yakuza OST is also miles better than the Sleeping Dogs OST. The combat is a matter of preference. So the only real edge i can give to Sleeping Dogs is that it has a more open world with driving and clothing customisation. And i'm a fan of Sleeping Dogs.
Sorry If I'm going to buy a game where I'm a criminal, with a title based on a criminal organization in real life, maybe I can give a ♥♥♥♥ about the story if I feel like an actual criminal who does bad stuff, you wanna call sleeping dogs cliché go ahead it's fair, but it's better to be cliché than incoherent.

I thoroughly enjoyed sleeping dogs but i found yakuza 0 to be much more enjoyable. The story and characters in yakuza are a lot more engaging and the substories/minigames were very entertaining as well. I also personally prefer yakuza's combat to sleeping dog's, but that's mostly because i loathe the arkham games style of combat
It sounds to me like you didn't enjoy it.

To be fair, Sleeping Dogs is a bit older than Yakuza 0, and 2nd, the Facial Animations on Yakuza 0 aren´t the best one either, but thats not what counts after all :D
You can look at titles before like yakuza 3 which puts sleeping dogs to shame.

Sleeping dogs throws a wet fish at Yakuza's stupid eye patch face.
