Are the other games this cheesy?
After almost everything Kiryu does in this game (aside for the main plot) such as helping everyone, pocket racing and all the cheesy dialogue, I say to myself "THIS guy was Yakuza?"

6 looks more real, not sure if 0 is just trying to reflect culture of 80's Japan.

Kiryu ain't best example of Yakuza. He stopped being one officially long ago and we still had him as protagonist in all games. Second game should have been the last one.

But isn't that the main charm of the Yakuza series?

You get to indulge yourself in the dramatic story of hard-boiled Yakuza life.
and at the same time you can do anything you want and just be yourself (Kiryu-self) doing Tamiya racing, disco, karaoke ETC.

It parody itself by increasing the contrast of serious Yakuza story with the goofiness of everyday life. And they've done it masterfully.

Yes, Kiryu has been established to be a kind man at heart despite his stoic demeanour.
You should note that the Japanese title of the series is called Ryū ga Gotoku which translate to "Like a Dragon". I don't know anything about Japan's meaning or symbolism of mythical creatures but that title is probably more appropriate than the word "Yakuza".
Though, since the game is about the yakuza, the English title is not too far off and it sounds more interesting to a westerner than "Like a Dragon".

But we wouldn't have Zero and the glorious remakes, Kiwami and Kiwami 2, if the series never get that far.
I heard that the writer(s) have been changed after the second game.

GTA IV does have its funny moments though.[tvtropes.org]
Hell, the gameplay can be hilarious at times.

For the entirety of the time we get to play as Kiryu throughout the series, he's only been Yakuza for maybe like 5% of that time.

So yeah, Yakuza as the name of the series in the west isn't very accurate. It should be called Former Yakuza Who Is Bad At Being Yakuza Keeps Getting Entangled In Plots That Involve Yakuza And Must Beat The Crap Out Of Yakuza As A Result, but that doesn't roll off the tongue as smoothly.

Who hasn't?
I still prefer 4, though, it's my favorite one. Serious is better when it comes to the crime genre.

San Adreas fells like sureal parody compared to gta 4. which is good in my book

The side stuff is always goofy, and some of that tends to flow into the main story as well. Like, in 6, as part of the main story, you're walking around with this baby in your arms, trying to get milk late at night, and every so often the baby interrupts your walking with crying and you've got to soothe it in this silly QTE minigame. Also, if you get involved in battles during that time you just hand the baby over to some random and confused passerby until the fight is over.

Also, the other games tend to have way cheesier main stories than 0 as well, not in the deliberately funny and goofy way, but really dumb twists and plot contrievances, sappy melodrama, etc. This game still has some of that but it's story holds back a bit more than the other games usually do and it's narrative seem at least a bit more thought out.

The over the top dialogue in the sidequests is just to keep things light. I love it. Especially how excited he gets about the video games and the phone calls lol
It is just meant to be a break from the serious tone of all the stories. You can go find levity any time you're not railroaded on a mission. Also I am pretty damn certain Kiryu still has his V-Card even as of Yakuza 6. He's a real doof but he kicks ass.
