KIRYU CHAN!
His lust for battle, not caring about being successful in business, meeting essentially proto-future him, his music tastes/fantasies, detaching himself from Makoto, finding a rival/equal in Kiryu.
It's not poorly written at all. Plus it was being led up to by the entire game. You're aware this is a prequel right? I'm a ♥♥♥♥♥♥' newb to the series and even I was able to figure that out. It isn't exactly a secret, The Mad Dog persona is something he puts on to mask his pain. It's an act.
If it were a real personality change then sure. Kiryu does actually excite him because Majima loves fighting, and the fact that Kiryu is someone he can't just beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of easily probably does give him a chub. But as for the rest of his Mad Dog persona, it's all an act.
I just take it as he started winging it from the moment he said "Kiryu-chan".
