Yes to the first, not really to the second. The yakuza games don't take place in entire cities/counties like GTA, they take place in small areas inspired by actual locations in japan.

ok, are those sections sorta free roam with loading in between areas?

Yakuza 0 takes place in 2 different city districts, after the first few chapters you can move more or less freely around the one you're in (you can only move freely from one to the other in post-game) but there are loading screens for entering buildings &c. and transition screens whenever you get into a fight on the streets.

semi-open world

Keep in mind that this is more like a open world beat em up rather than a open world driving and shooting game.

there are only 2 locations here in Yakuza 0 and you can't roam freely until the final save point. also this is not GTA style roaming. so you can't drive a car / shooting gun / hitting npc. you do run into enemies and you'll enter a battle scene where you can beat their asses.

The Story is MUCH better/deeper then ANY GTA.

Open World feels more like an adventure game or JRPG. You have « random » encounters on map and take quests.

It is the first game but characters/atmosphere evolution follows the release date logic. Yakuza 0 has modern yakuza flavour

It seems open world but it is very limited. The story is better with this one, but the overall gameplay is way better in Sleeping Dogs.
