But I would say these are the reasons that I am happy to have bought dotAGE:
* Original concepts and mechanics that I find fascinating.
* Highly replayable, with different game options and a vast array of random elements, so each game is different.
* Excellent in-game reference materials, so I could make sense of the game and really get to know the mechanics (which I enjoy learning).
* The dev is worth supporting. Catman is perhaps the most responsive and friendly dev I've seen on any Steam discussion boards, and he clearly has put a tonne of effort into this game. I hope he goes on to produce more games in the future – I will be interested to see what he does next!
For balance, what I don't like about the game is that each playthrough is normally longer than my attention span. I wouldn't recommend it to a player who wants to start and finish a run in a single sitting (which is something I usually prefer).
To LeftPaw, i suggest to try the demo and take a look at what the game is like, and know that there are a lot of unlocks (you can peek at the unlocks menu after you unlock it!)
The game in itself is good, AND different. It's definitely not "mobile-like". The mechanics are interesting, somewhat unique, and challenging.
There is a whole progression system that lets you unlock new stuff to try on subsequent playthroughs, pushing you to start your second and third playthrough, but I'd say the replay value is still on the lower end, you're unlikely to play this hundreds of hours. 10+, probably 20+, then it does feel like you've seen most of what you had to see
With randomized maps, events and tech trees I think the game offers a lot of replayability.
I feel there's potential for dozens or hundreds of hours of additional play for me.
