The white robe you get when you find all the hidden glyphs, then in the starting hub area there is a platform near the chapter selection where you can switch your form.
Also there is no point being disappointed about the game not saving your exact location. If you beat the game you'll understand why the game starts they way it does.
In the starting hub area you can choose from what area to start, and you can see what areas you've completed, aka if you've found all the wall portraits and hidden glyphs.
as some people say, its short anyways, lets say about 2 hours and i d recommend to do one full run in one go.
you did spoil yourself with things. you expected things, without knowing what they are about. yes, thats dissapointing.
only thing you can do, is try to make the best out of it. dont lookup more and just enjoy exploring journey, find the symbols or follow companions, they often want to show where they are anyways.
the game doesnt "develop" in one playthrough, but the more often you play it, the more you learn about it. but you need an eye for details.
if you play once and another time 5 months later, you might walk into a chapter select gate and not even recognise you skipeed some levels, because you cant remember it anymore.. ;)
you can have a tier 2 white robe, but a tier 1 white doesnt exist.
And you get full embroidery with 4 playthroughs.
I am starting to really enjoy the game, but I am still disappointed about the lack of save points, at least after finding a glyph or a symbol. If you miss a glyph you will have to redo a chapter all over again.
Now I am stuck at the point where you have to leave chapter 7 The Mountain and enter chapter 8 The Summit, at the large balcony where I get blown back all the time.
I am not used to this type of game, the reason why I decided to play my first full playthrough with Steam in offline mode, just to learn.
Don't be so stressed for collecting all those things in your first playthrough. Just relax and enjoy it! I did it in my 3rd playthrough and been helped by cute companions.
You don't need to collect all the glyphs in order to finish the game! The glyphs are optional, if at some point you want that particular achievement. The only thing you need do to complete the game is keep moving forward through the levels, and reach Paradise. The whole experience takes no more than two hours. I'd advise any new player to set aside that amount of time to play the game through in one sitting, rather than itty-bitty chunks. It's a far more immersive experience that way -- not to mention that if you're online then you'll meet fellow players along the way, and naturally want to stick by them, not disconnect at the end of a chapter.
The point where you're currently stuck, the windy balcony, IS an absolute pain, particularly if you're new and don't know the trick to get up the stairs quickly. Wait by the side for the wind to die down, and then pelt it up the stairs as Tung recommends, heading right as soon as you hit the top, so you reach safety where the wind can't blow you back down again.
