Can you co-op with a specific friend or is it only random matchmaking?

I did it on epic with my GF, it’s basically matter of entering the online area at the same time, we did it after 2 tries

Let's just say, when the game launches it will be harder to match up with someone specific for a time, unless ip addresses are prioritized in terms of proximity/ping.

I forced the matchmaking on PS3 a few years ago, it took about an hour for my friend and me to end up in the same session. That was when a lot of people were still playing online.

i think the first days of journey on steam it will be hard to meet a specific person, especially in the first level were you can connect.
it will be so full that you always run in other persons and then need to leave them. which gives me the feeling i am a really unwanted person then. like "whats wrong with me, why do you hate me"

Huh... well that's somewhat disappointing, I was hoping to play through with my partner. I guess we could try gaming the system like the guides suggest but that seems like it would break the flow of the experience somewhat.

We cant make it like that. There's an 'invite to lobby' option which you can see time to time but it didnt work either. If there is no other way to join your friend why the hell steam selling game with a 'multiplayer' tag?

It's really sad how you cant just join your friend. IMO its much more immersion breaking when you have to keep rejoining and trying to "game" the system into connecting you both. High key wish they'd just loosen up and add that functionality. Yes, the point of the game is to have a Journey with someone, which, i'd also prefer to do with my partner.

As an answer to your question though, aside from triggering specific locations in the bridge level, its complete RNG

It's only like this if you insist on playing with a friend. You break the immersion yourself by trying to play the game in the way it wasn't intended to be played. That's your fault lol.

Playing with friends in games is great but this one makes you play with other Humans that you know nothing about....nothing....except you have to work together, that's the beauty of it.
