Remote play refusing 2nd player input
ME and my girlfriend have been playing secret of mana for 27 hours now and the player 2 controller is just refusing input, like a setting switched and is making it singleplayer. nothing we tried can revert this. we played 27 hours fine as coop but after grinding, we logged out and suddenly she can't control her character anymore. Now i can shift + tab into remote play and trad + drop her controller onto mine making her control player 1, and me player 2, but then i can't move anything either. so it's not a controller issue and remote play is detecting both controllers, its just not letting us control a second player.

We waited a few days and tried again a few times so this is a few weeks old problem, and square enix's site just give me 40 characters to explain this... which obviously i can't.

Help?

I can advise check to see if you have any other game crontrollers like flight sticks or midi devices connectede to the USB port... those make the game think it has another gamepad connected... but if you want to tryanother cpu... let me know

we can swap the players around, both controllers work with the game. the controller isn't the issue. the issue is that the game refuses to accept that the game is 2 player. When remote playing i can play the game as if its a single player game, and my girlfriend using remote play can do the same, if i give her control of player 1 she can control it like normal. but the issue is when we want to play coop and me control player 1 and her control player 2. its just not accepting that it's a coop game.

And the best part, i contacted steam support, they said to contact square enix.
so i did
And they said to contact steam as "Steam is a third party program and is not supported"

I'm On right now... do you want to try remote Co-Op?? ..... we can even try 3 players... the original SNES was made for that... to see if that works
DUCK Nov 11, 2020 @ 4:15pm
the game plays normal in my system... when remote Co-Op... I wonder if has anything to do with one of your systems
DUCK Nov 11, 2020 @ 4:56pm
You know what, I just remembered... there was a fellow game player of this game, who had graphics problems, the graphics problems made his game act funny, he did not know it yet but after I watch him play the game I confirmed his issue, the solution was that he was using the (DP) Display Port cable... its a modern cable that runs at 4K and above graphics... this (DP) cable was the issue.... so I asked to use an HDMI cable in an HDMI port ..... that forced the game to run at more normal resolution and fixed his problem.... You can try using an HDMI cable and HDMI port... not an adapter... it may fix the problem you have, not saying it will but sometimes odd things this will solve the problem when a game is not running on hardware it does not support... this graphics issue can also be on Laptops because they run on akward high resolutions on their screens....

I keep my graphics card on the HDMI port for this reason... I use an NVIDIA 1660... used to have an NVIDIA 1070... game runs normal on each card..

It was nothing to do with graphics, i use HDMI, its not a matter of it doesn't detect the 2nd players controler. I can swap who controls player 1 and they can play the game just fine from their end. but with my controler in the player 2 slot, and i cannot do anything myself. That should be simple and evident enough to show that both crontrollers work and should be working with the game. The game just refuses to let us play coop. Its like a setting disabled coop somwhere.

You are right.... I just played with an online CO-OP with a friend on this game.... 2nd player does NOT work....

ever since that Windows update 20H2 version...

the game needs to update... my other games that do online CO-OP work... its just this Secret Of Mana game that has a problem

EDIT: THIS POST WAS WRONG. SEE BELOW.

Here is what worked for me (thanks to this post for clues: https://steamcommunity.com/app/637670/discussions/0/3002178258668953300/ ):
1. Close out of Secret of Mana completely.
2. Re-open the game. (This is important or the below steps will not work.)
3. Load the saved game with at least 2 characters active (i.e. Randi and Primm).
4. Shift-tab to enter Steam overlay.
5. Unplug my controller from the computer.
6. Invite my friend to remote play.
7. Confirm they are connected and verify their controller is showing as active. (This can be done by looking at the Steam Overlay and seeing their controller appear as active.)
8. Plug my controller back in.
9. Verify both controllers are active.
10. Drag and drop my controller to be player 1. (Do this by dragging the player 2 controller on top of the player 1 controller in the Steam Overlay, and it will swap them.)
11. Shift-tab to return to the game and verify both players are active.

This worked for me this morning.

I've done this, that's how i can say that both controllers are working. In the steam overlay both controllers are being detected and i can change 2nd player controller to control Randi but then i can't control Primm. Its just the second player slot that isn't receiving controller input

My last post was missing some steps.

Here is what worked for me yesterday evening. This has worked 3 times now. (thanks to this post for clues: https://steamcommunity.com/app/637670/discussions/0/3002178258668953300/ ):

6. Have my friend unplug their controller.
7. Invite my friend to remote play. They must accept the invite before completing the next steps!
8. Disable keyboard and mouse for my friend in the Steam Overlay, after they accept the invite.
9. Have my friend plug in their controller.
10. Confirm they are connected and verify their controller is showing as active. (This can be done by looking at the Steam Overlay and seeing their controller appear as active.)
11. Plug my controller back in.
12. Verify both controllers are active.
13. Drag and drop my controller to be player 1. (Do this by dragging the player 2 controller on top of the player 1 controller in the Steam Overlay, and it will swap them.)
14. Shift-tab to return to the game and verify both players are active.

This has now worked for me on 3 occasions. If I do not do this, remote play does not work, and I have the same issue described in the OP.

One thing I will say, the workaround above is ridiculous, and I agree they should fix it. A 14 step workaround is asinine.
