I hate remix music keep it original 100% for this remake :feena::reah:

I enjoyed a majority of the remade music, some of it I may have liked even more than the original.

There was one track though, that I HATED with a passion.
The sand ship/Tasnica music.
It was all over the place and really ruined the immersion for me. About the time that it decided to be some kind of horribly ghetto techno sound I had to switch to the original music until leaving the zone.

I think I prefer the original in almost every case. When I don't think the new one is worse, it's usually because it's basically the same as the original. The Mana Fortress music was *really* weird. Now that I've played through the game with the new music once, I'll probably use the original now for the rest of time. (That's not to say that I despise the new music or anything, I mean how the heck could you top the SoM soundtrack? You can't.)

Either way, though, it's nice to have music that isn't constantly cut off by the sound effects.

So far the only one I hate is the track where Randi falls off the log and heading towards the Mana Sword at the beginning. Ugh-it sounds terrible!

Are the alternate versions used? I'm in the process of identifying which music file is which, and sk2000.win.sab is the boss music... the one with _2 is another version of the boss music. Are both used in the remade soundtrack?

Either way the game happily will play renamed files meaning you CAN choose song versions by manually messing with the files.
Some of the updated music is better, some of it is on par, and some of it is worse. In particular I prefer the original boss theme to the updated version. But in other ways, that old MIDI music does show its age.

I think some of the tracks in the earlier areas of the game (which are the duller ones from the original IMO) are superior. It seems like as you get further in and visit areas that have specific tracks, those tend to be better in the original form.

If you can swap individual tracks, I may actually try that so I can use all the music I like without having to constantly switch the sound options.

Edit: Yay the soundtrack isn't exclusive to iTunes. Getting it on Amazon.

It is well within my ability to make a selector tool for the music. Whether I stick to it and complete it is another matter. I'm well on my way figuring out which file is which song.

Does anyone know for sure whether the alternate boss theme is used ever? There is another with an alternate that I didn't identify yet.

Edit 2:
The cannon travel jingle has a remade version (sk2012.win.sab)... I wonder if it's used in game anywhere.

It depends on the location.

Some tracks are better with the remix. Kakkara Desert, Great Palace (outdoors), Pure Lands and the sad music are definitely there.

Most tracks don't really change my opinion much: Although Mana Fortress added that voice stuff, I didnt mind it. Most of the other songs sounded much like the originals and the boss theme was alright.

I would say Prophecy (the world map when the Mana Fortress is active) suffered the most. I don't mind the guitar buildup, but the ending of it was sort of thrown off by it getting too heavy.

The voice acting could have definitely been better.

Okay there are several files with VERY different versions of the same song. My question is whether both versions play or whether one is an alternate unused file in the music. I'd have to complete the remake to know for sure. I've identified all of the remake tracks now however. Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes.

I'm not saying it sucks or it's great, it's a matter of taste and opinions,
but the fact that it's - as you already said - a remix, is just wrong:
this game is supposed to be a "remake" and not a "remix". The game itself does a good job on that (if there were not bugs and if they'd put at least the slightest bit of effort into it), but many songs are a remix, sometimes I couldn't even recognize which song that was...
I still like many remixed songs, but I'd prefer if they added them as a bonus on some OST, and instead "remade" the original songs. Oh well, it's better than nothing.

I think most people find the Mana Fortress music weird now because of the constant voice. However, that one has already been in the old track as well, just not as a "voice". You can hear the sound pretty much during the entire song. Kinda hard to describe, but you hear it.

Leave time for Love

I still love the song as much as I did back then, but of course it could annoy some people how it sounds now.

On track I've grown to love in the Remake is "Did you see the Ocean". Already an awesome tune, but I feel that in the original game, they tried to make the track too busy and it sounded like it was limited by SNES Hardware, it sounds like there was supposed to be an extra instrument or three in the piece, like the original composer wanted to do something more with that song, but couldn't because of limitations.

The remake fills it out a bit more and makes it much smoother and more cohesive.

It was already known that the composer was pulling his hair out, cause of the limitations of the SNES he wanted to make the music way better.

Well, I never read about any of that stuff, lol. But some tracks (especially the one I mentioned), it is obvious he wanted to go places with that track that he couldn't and it sounds..... nerfed. It sounds like what you'd get, if you tried to release the game on a lesser-powerful system and had to "downgrade" it to fit, kinda like trying to re-create chiptune music with MIDI or something.

Now obviously I say this as no offense to the composer; he did great with what he had to work with.

In the credits Hiroki Kikuta is only credited with the music composition and there are a bunch of credits for people who did the new arrangements, which probably explains why quality is all over the map. It would've been a better decision to have Kikuta do the new arrangements himself.

But that's the story of this remake's development...outsourced to hell and back with mixed results in every category.
