Just like AliceEngine said : « Same as the door in the rebel house. »
However, there was a secret room on the Snes version and you can reach it thanks to the code. In the Underground City before the Mana Palace, just go to the room with the puzzle buttons switch colors red, blue, yellow and green. The secret room is just West from that room and you can reach it by going through the wall with the code. There is a Glove's Orb and a Sword's Orb in the chests here !
No such secrets for now with the remake until we could pass through wall to see if the room is still here. Just a secret room to discover on the Snes version for now . ^^
Here is a screenshoot of it :

For sure, I tried to save a chest with a sword orb (by not taking the one in the treasure room of Pandore) because I said to me : "if I am level 8 thanks to the Mana Tree in any case, then let's save the chest at Pandore and take it after that. But after the Mana Tree, the chest in Pandore disapears ...
This chest in the secret room is indeed the lost sword orb but the developers made a limit to 8 anyway ... (The Mana Tree will not level up your sword to +1 if you got it in the secret room and after the encounter with the tree, the chests with sword orbs do not exist anymore ... (for the Pandora one, it is sure. For the one in the Northtown Ruins, I don't remember if I tryed ).
What can be said about the last orb for the Mana sword is that the developpers wanted that the magic of Dryad makes the 9th orb. Since the Mana Sword is very powerfull, the effect was not destined to last at level 9 like it did for other weapon because the power of the Mana Sword can destroy the whole world. Well, it is a scenaristic explanation.
And yes, that has never been clear for the player with bugs and lot of strange things, such as what is happening when you reach the Mana Tree !
Edit : I remember other games when a too powerfull weapon makes bugs. In Wonder Boy in Monster World, if you get the armet or the flyings boots or the gauntlet when you have max equipments, it will level down everything to the worst equipments) !
In Secret of Evermore, the magic of Atlas also makes bugs when you use it too often ! :-)
I noticed it too, but alas it's only a decoration...
