Switching characters (switching via D-pad doesn't seem to work)

I'm trying to switch between characters. I've searched online, and I've read 3 distinct things: 1. You hold down left and right at the same time on the D-pad (this doesn't work for me). 2. You press left to go to a certain character and you press right to go to another (this also doesn't work for me, all this makes happen is move the characters across the screen). 3. Check the game commands in the menu.

I checked the game commands, and it gave the D-pad as the way I switch between characters, but did not specify any further than simply saying it's the D-pad. I've tried the above techniques.

Is there something I'm missing? Am I supposed to hold down another button or press another button first and then press the D-pad? Is there a special window I have to go to first? Maybe my controller is just broken?

I see now. I have to be in analog mode to do it.

You can also press select to cycle between them

I have this problem but analog mode doesn't work for me either. Select doesn't work either, nor can I move independently with the 2nd char acting with AI, it stands in place.
