Griffin Hands..
..what's the deal with these things?

Get to the Pure Land, expect to get beat up a little bit.. and everything seems to check out; getting hit by about 100 by most things, I expected as much.. gotta level a little bit, no problem.

Then these things come out and literally two shot the entire party for 280+ damage per hit.

I'm sorry, what? Before entering this part of the game my equipment was the best that could be purchased on every character.. so did these things get a little overtuned or what? I could understand possible the 150 damage range or so, but nearly 300 per hit?

Sounds like you are a little low level. These enemies are strong but not too difficult in my experience. Note that they drop the best helmet so you'll want to farm them.

I don't remember them being that difficult in the original game by any means.. but, then again, I'm pretty sure I stopped and farmed Dark Knights the first time you could fight them (outside of the Imperial Castle? I believe) until I was level 99 also.

Also, oops. I already managed to make it past that and only have the Mana Fortress left to do. As many of the things as I killed I never saw them drop anything, sadly.

As for my group.. average level of 48 or so when I entered.

Until that point, the only "difficult" things I really encountered was the typical "new area, need new equipment and some levels" kind of thing.. stuff actually able to hurt me outside of bosses from the zone prior. But those things? Ridiculous.

They deal tons in the original game too.

I feel like they are more challenging this time because of less accurate hits with most weapons than in the original.

At the time you release your charged attack, Griffin hands are here in front of you. But at the time your attack should have hit them they've already jumped behind you. And when they stay there, half of the time, they just evade your attack.
... Blasting them with magic is still easy done, though.

Compared to the original ones, I don't think they were weaker, nor they were less nimble. Values are the same, I am sure. But they were easier to control, mostly due to the flatness of the sprites and environment on SNES. Back then the monsters' sprites had one or two forms I knew were untouchable, so I waited for the right moment to release my attack. Which is harder for me in this remake. Good !

Apparently I just don't remember having issues anywhere in the game.. I grinding for I don't know how long on the first three Dark Knights you ever encountered until my party was level 99, about 3/4 of the way through the game.

Sadly, all that's left for me is the Mana Fortress.. so I missed out on the Griffin Helm. Oh well!

You should gear up at Neko @ the mana palace. She offers new goods.

Did you really just necro this thread to be a tool?

A tool that can't read, no less. Wow.

For future players - Magic is the typically the best way to deal with them if you're a bit on the low-level side.

Lucid Barrier prevents them them from hitting you with physical attacks.
Moon Energy only costs 2 MP and gives you 100% critical rate with weapons.

You can just infinitely kill them with.. Sylphid? I believe is what they were weak against. Or maybe Gnome, I forget. Even if you're slightly lower-leveled than them, they still get one-shotted even if you multi-target.

When you get low on MP, just Drain MP multi-target the area, walk out, back in, repeat until full, and start killing again.

It's still fairly absurd (and strange) how much harder they were compared to things in all other areas of the game when you first arrive, though.
