Maybe the game will become insanely popular again and we'll see more of the series get remakes or at least releases, including the mobile titles.
^ Most likely what you'll get from a Square Enix rep if you ask
If this ever happened to me, I would know the world is doomed.
Hey. Saw your post on Chrono Trigger discussions, which I copied above, and I wanted to offer a quick opinion. I think you should get it. It's a classic RPG and having it readily available is a good reason to keep it around. It's not like Steam is going out of style anytime soon.
Based on my experience playing it, as a re-release, I think they did a good job. It plays like the Classic RPG it is. It's content is intact and menus are cleaned up, but not unnecessarily overhauled. It's based on the original game, not the DS version, but missing that content isn't a dealbreaker. As for features it has (currently) the option to switch to 16-bit sprites. New 21:9 visuals and a few classic ratio options and full-screen support. Also, since the FF Pixel Remasters are done, its getting more support now. But even if it didn't have all that, it's an easy-to-access version of one of Square Enix's Finest RPGS. Hard to go wrong with that.
As for a HD-2D remake, it's possible, but I think the games they are remaking in that style are far enough back that nobody can play them anymore or brand new stories. DQ 3 and Live A Live never released in the West. Meanwhile, the other games in that style are trying to be new, vibrant and bold like Octopath Traveller, Triangle Strategy or Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (and Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising).
We can hold out hope, but it's better to look to future and be happy that we have the classics that are still available. Especially if we need a a game with a great story that doesn't try to throw 100 things at once at us. A classic RPG. Casual, yet compelling and worthy of being called a classic and a masterpiece.

Labelled Enix.
Bit grindy, difficult enough to keep you interested.
Probably available if you dig a little in emulation.
There is a steam copy paste of Chrono Trigger? As for a remake, right now SE in in the business of pixel art. I'll be playing Cyberpunk over there while they do that.
P.S. I love the Secret of Mana version here.
