[whatever drive you have it on C for most people] -> Program Files [It might be Program Files (x86)] - Steam -> steamapps -> common -> Riven. That could be entirely wrong depending on where you installed it to, but basically you have to find the Riven folder. Within that folder, find the application. It should end in .exe. Right-click it and select properties. Click on the compatibility tab, try setting it to win xp service pack 3, if that does not fix the problem also try vista and me. Windowed mode also can help.
There is also Scumvm for it as well, if you still have issues after using compatibility mode I would try that instead.
For saving try using keyboard commands;
CTRL+S saves, CTRL+O opens. ALT+F4 for closing game
Forgot to mention but for older games gog.com is safer place to buy them, they often update games themselves to run on better on newer systems. In Myst's case it is supposed to be pretty similar to the steam version in that regard, although for some people it runs better.
Not to disagree with Noitalever, but what he is talking about does not cover ScummVM. It has its own commands to run games. F5 will help with Save and Quit. There isn't really a help or options as most of the information about how to run ScummVM is here (http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/User_Manual/Playing_a_game_with_ScummVM). That can get rather confusing though. So let me know if you run into any other problems.
Although it looks like scumvm should work fine now so probably do not need to worry about this, but if the game runs for a bit and then crashes it is often a problem with the game running on more than one processor. If you isolated it to one processor it would likely also resolve it. Do not bother use the commands below unless you are trying to run the game again without scumvm, just giving the information in case it proves useful for you in the future;
1. Under Steam Libraries Right click the game
2. Select Properties
3. Set Launch options
4. Type /affinity 1 (Affinity 1 is core 0 Affinity 2 is core 1 You can choose which ever one you want)
5. Select Ok
@monkeymadness, thank you, was not aware that scumvm had a different set of commands
I don't think it will be much help. It is a user manual for ScummVM, but the way it is laid out is hard to understand. I was suprised that the link was blocked. If you go onto the main website (Click the Wiki tab on the right, then the User Manual tab on the right on the next page) you can find a user manual that they have been working on that I think is better than the one I posted.
@Noitalever, no problem. You do a good job of helping people get Myst to run on their computers.
