Uru: Complete Chronicles

Uru: Complete Chronicles

Hey I'm Back! Dec 28, 2020 @ 10:42am
White Textures Issue
I've just bought the game and downloaded it but when in game most of the textures are white.

My computer is decent and all of the drivers are up to date. All other games are running perfectly. I had this issue only in URU. So what's wrong with it?

My specs:
Win10 with the latest patch
AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6 cores CPU
AMD rx 460 4gb GPU
16 GB Corsair Vangeance 3000mhz Ram
650 watt Xigmatek PSU

Is windows 10 update set to also do updates for all Microsoft products and not just windows? Some of the programs it updates are used by URU so that might also help.

Try verifying the game cache;
Right-click on the game in your Steam library, select properties, select the local files tab, and click “Verify Integrity of game cache”. If that does not work I would try reinstalling.

If the still does not work try using compatibility mode.
[whatever drive you have it on C for most people] -> Program Files [It might be Program Files (x86)] - Steam -> steamapps -> common -> URU. That could be entirely wrong depending on where you installed it to, but basically you have to find the URU folder. Within that folder, find the application. It should end in .exe. Right-click it and select properties. Click on the compatibility tab, try setting it to win xp service pack 2, if that does not fix the problem also try vista and me. Windowed mode also can help.

If all those fail I would contact Cyan support either by emailing them at support@cyan.com or creating an account and making a ticket at http://support.cyan.com/
If you do resolve the issue it may not be a bad idea to contact them anyway just to let them know about the issue.

Where can I check all of them?

Go to Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update, Advance Options, Receive Updates for other Microsoft Products. If it was not already checked, check it and then run windows update a couple of times until it no longer detects new updates.
It usually is already checked but sometimes is not.

Just checked additional updates and it found win xp 2005 service pack 1 and downloaded it but the same issue continues. I already filed a ticket to Cyan 2 days ago but still waiting for the reply. All other Myst games are working fine except URU :steamfacepalm:

Try re-installing the game after doing that update, it might have changed something. Did you also try the compatibility mode?

One other thing there is a beta patch that adds widescreen support. It is possible the patch might also resolve your issue. Note that it is still in beta so may have bugs of its own, likely not as bad as what you are having though;

Next options are a bit more of a long shot. This is usually done to resolve crashing in older games but cannot hurt to try it;

Try isolating it to one processor,
1. Under Steam Libraries Right click URU
2. Select Properties
3. Set Launch options
4. Type /affinity 1 (Affinity 1 is core 0 Affinity 2 is core 1 You can choose which ever one you want)
5. Select Ok
You should only need to do this once.

Sometimes the steam option fails to keep it isolated in which case you can try these steps;
Run the game, tab out and open task manager with crtl-alt-delete. Go to the processes tab and select URU.exe, right click it and choose "Set Affinity..." (note that if in windows 10 first right click go to details before right click set Affinity) Uncheck all the CPUs except for the first one, which should be CPU 0. You would need to do that everytime you play.

Try also disabling visual themes in the compatibility tab and see if that has any impact.

As a last option you can try installing either QuickTime version 4.1.2, QuickTime 6.5.2, or QuickTime 7.7.1 . Different version seem to work for different Myst games I have not heard of older versions of Quicktime being used for URU before so this last option would be much more experimental. You may need to place quicktime.qts into the URU folder if you try this one.

URU does not crash it's working good but it has graphical issues as I mentioned above. Cyan support didn't asnwer to my ticket btw.

It is typically done to resolve crashing issues but might help with your issue as well. It would not hurt to try it. Essentially we are onto trial and error to see what else might be causing the problem.

I should mention those are the last ideas I have, I am not aware of any solutions people have come up with for the Myst games beyond that might work. Although some of Cyan's post indicate they intend to release an additional update sometime in the future for some of the Myst games, so they may be planning on fixing it sometime future if you are okay waiting.

I've set /affinity 1 argument and installed the quicktime but they didn't work. That weird white patches and white terrain are really annoying.

I am sorry to hear that. I am afraid I am not familiar with any other solutions. There is a Cyan discord server that Cyan uses in place of their forums, it is possible some users there might be able to help. I am afraid I do not understand how to navigate Discord so I am not much help with that. I find it rather confusing. This is the link below.
